Meet the Artists of the Creatures & Canvas Summer Art Camp
|
|
Maggie Lane
Leading the 5-9 age group for the week
Maggie is a multifaceted artist who expresses her artistic vision through the meticulous art of furniture repurposing. She sees potential beauty in the overlooked and the forgotten, turning what many would consider waste into cherished pieces of art. Each piece tells a story, not just of its own history, but of Maggie's dedication to sustainability and her belief in giving new life to the old. Her work is a testament to her creativity and her commitment to conservation, blending functionality with a unique aesthetic that draws heavily on the influences of her beloved Southwest Florida. Maggie's love for the ocean and wildlife is not only evident in her art but also in her actions. Whether she's on stage, in her workshop, or knee-deep in coastal cleanup efforts, Maggie embodies the spirit of an artist who not only creates but also cares deeply for the world around her.

|
Cesar Aguilar
Leading the 14-17 age group in advanced painting and charcoal art
With his rich history in our local area, Cesar has forged a new era in community service by providing the communities we love with overwhelming inspiration and contribution. Working on murals to brighten our streets and schools with history and remembrance, Cesar has contributed to a multitude of projects, including work at many local organizations, schools, and police departments, memorializing fallen Officer Julian Keen in the streets of La Belle. With his co-founded business, Artsemble Underground, he has worked on murals at many local businesses, organizations, and private spaces from Cape Coral to Miami.

|
Heather Donaldson
Teaching sketching and painting to both the 14-17 and 10-13 age groups
As a self-taught artist based in Fort Myers, Florida, I specialize in acrylic paints, paint markers, and watercolor pencils. I also organize artists in Bootleggers Alley for art walk and music walk events, providing them a platform to showcase their work. My artistic journey is driven by a desire to refine my skills and craft pieces that foster emotional connections, encouraging viewers to explore their feelings positively. Through vivid strokes on canvas, I delve into the depths of human emotions and mental health, offering a bridge to those who resonate with unspoken turmoil and inviting viewers to embrace vulnerability in shared experiences.

|
Amelia Legros
Instructing the 10-13 and 14-17 age groups through clay art
Amelia, a talented ceramic artist from Florida, draws inspiration from nature for her creations. Her work reflects the state's wildlife and landscapes. Starting her journey in college, she has dedicated herself to mastering ceramics, focusing on native flora and fauna motifs. Amelia plans to venture into larger installations and collaborate with environmental groups to promote ecological awareness through her art. Her commitment to nature and craftsmanship sets her apart in the ceramics community.

Animal Encounter on the First Day of Camp!
|
|
A local Animal Rescue and Sanctuary is coming to Creatures & Canvas
Each class will have a 60-minute session with several species of local wildlife. Animals include LIVE reptile ambassadors — snakes, lizards, turtles, and alligators! Along with our live animals, we will have non-living items such as snake skeletons, turtle shells, alligator teeth, and more! Campers will have the opportunity to interact directly with the animals under the guidance of their educator. The educator will teach campers about animals by showcasing them up close. This hands-on experience allows campers to touch and take photos with our animal ambassadors.
|
|
Plus, we're thrilled to have Christina Kontos, our Environmental Mitigation Manager & Wildlife Biologist, join us on Wednesday for an informative talk. Christina has an impressive background, including working with the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission and caring for a pride of lions at Lion Country Safari. She’s dedicated to wildlife conservation and manages 13,000 acres of preserves at Babcock Ranch.

Founder's Review Committee
Fees & Deposits
|
|
The Founder has exclusive authority to review and act upon all applications for review of proposed improvements until the expiration of the Development and Sale Period or all units planned for the property have been improved with dwellings. The Founder may designate one or more persons, including architects, engineers, or other professionals, to act on its behalf in reviewing any application and may establish a committee known as the Founder’s Review Committee or “FRC.” The FRC has 30 days to review a completed application with all supporting documents and required approvals.
The Babcock Ranch Community is continuously growing, and so are the Architectural Design Change or “ADC” requests for the FRC to review. Homes are sold averaging 20-25 a week, with an average of 2.5 persons per household.
At this rate, we can expect per year:
- 1,040 - 1,300 homes sold
- 2,600 - 3,250 additional residents
Applications for Architectural Design Changes:
- 2023, year total: 1,048
- 2024, present day: Over 350
HOA's Role in the ARC Application Process
The Master HOA is designated as the entity to speak on behalf of the FRC and ISD regarding architectural design change applications. Through effective communication, the staff at the HOA educates residents on the Design Guidelines and process for approval. The FRC and ISD have a set of requirements to adhere to depending on the type of change, which may result in additional documentation to be requested and communicated by the HOA. The HOA assists residents from the initial intake of the application until the completion of the project, such as:
- Where to find the Design Guidelines
- How to submit an application
- The initial intake of submitted applications
- Documents required for the type of change
- Required approvals before final review
- Sub-HOA letter of approval
- ISD stamp of approval
- Deposit requests for larger projects
- Communication with Vendors
- Inspections of completed projects
The ISD, FRC, and the HOA work together to maintain the community’s architectural standards by ensuring compliance with the Design Guidelines. The staff's hours dedicated to this process ensure that residents take pride in their community’s look, feel, and aesthetics.
FRC Fees and Deposits
A Deposit and Fee Structure for the Master Association was adopted on May 3, 2024, by the BRRA Board regarding Architectural and Landscape Change Submissions. As the influx of architectural review submissions increases in conjunction with home sales at Babcock Ranch, the amount of staffing to oversee the review process is also increasing at the Master Association level. As such, we will be implementing a Master Association Review fee structure to aid us in offsetting these rising costs accordingly.
Please see the attached charter section outlining the Master Association's legal authority to do so and the breakdown of the fee structure that will be implemented on June 1st, 2024.
THIS ONLY APPLIES TO THOSE WHO ARE APPLYING FOR AN FRC SUBMISSION.

Update on the PKWY: Babcock Trail Park System
Babcock Ranch’s The PKWY, a system of six new parks located in MidTown and spanning approximately 313 acres of preserve space along Babcock Trail Road, offers custom park and playground equipment, themed playgrounds, grassy mounds and multipurpose fields for picnics and community gatherings.
The first three parks scheduled to be completed around July 2024 – Hillcrest Park, The Lagoon and Bark Park – will feature themed play areas, an observation tower for scenic views, a designated fishing spot, ample space for dogs to run off leash and pavilions for gathering. Bluebird Park and Palmetto Park are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024, followed by Explorers Park. A sneak peek video of The PKWY is available here.
In March, we announced details on The PKWY via the Babcock Ranch Residential Association Bulletin. We’re excited to provide you with details on each park’s offerings, plus updates on each park’s current progress:
-
Bluebird Park will feature grassy mounds, bluebird-themed amenities and innovative playground equipment. Paving will begin in a few weeks, with the restroom construction already begun, shade shelter construction in June and playground construction in July
-
Hillcrest Park takes the high ground with an impressive hill for climbing, slides to the bottom, and a two-story observation tower. The park’s observation tower and playground installation are ongoing
-
The Lagoon offers serenity and invites anglers to the new 3.3-acre lake for catch-and-release fun in the stocked lake. Construction of the fishing pier, dock and restroom building are underway
-
Explorers Park is a fully inclusive park for people of all abilities. This one-of-a-kind park features a playground with custom equipment that will allow the imagination to run wild, including enormous alligator-shaped play structures. Special sensory areas will be installed, including a 3-D simulation of a Florida panther and cub along with a sensory farm park. An impressive community garden is sure to please residents with a green thumb. Paving will start soon, with the construction of the restroom building and farmstand ongoing, and shelter construction beginning in June
-
Bark Park will bring two fenced-in areas for small and large breeds, agility courses and watering stations. Restroom building construction is in progress, with sidewalk construction and landscaping starting in a few weeks
-
Palmetto Park is geared for play with a covered basketball court, exercise areas and equipment, a super-sized splash pad with an overhead waterfall, a two-story treehouse-themed playground and more. Basketball court construction is in progress, with shade structures and playground construction beginning in June
For your safety, please keep in mind that residents are strictly PROHIBITED from accessing The PKWY as they are active construction sites. No exceptions will be permitted under any circumstances. Please be aware that active construction sites within Babcock Ranch, including The PKWY, are extremely dangerous, and a lot of heavy machinery is operated.
As always, your safety is our top priority. We would like to thank you in advance for your kind cooperation while we continue construction on The PKWY and will keep you updated on its progress and park openings.

Wildlife Photo of the Week:
Florida Softshell Turtle
|
|
Species: Florida Softshell Turtle (Apalone ferox)
Location: Curry Creek Canal
Photographers: Christine Ginder
Christina's Take: Insights from Babcock Ranch Environmental Mitigation Manager Christina Kontos:
- The Florida softshell turtle is a common native turtle that inhabits ponds, streams, marshes, and drainage ditches with muddy or sandy bottoms because they often conceal themselves within the sand or mud at the very bottom of these water bodies.
- These water turtles have a leathery soft oblong shell that is mostly smooth apart from some bumps behind the head. They have webbed feet, and their nostrils are tubular, which act like a snorkel when they break the surface of the water for air.
- The softshell turtles are carnivorous and feed on snails, insects, fish, and crustaceans.
- Adult females are 9-11 inches with short tails and adult males are 6-8 inches with longer tails.
- Nesting is from late March to July with an average clutch size of 20 eggs but can vary from 9-38 eggs and females can nest 4-6 times per season, therefore large females may lay over 200 eggs annually!
-
They spend most of their time in the water but can also be seen basking along shorelines or crossing the road to look for another home to inhabit or find preferred nesting opportunities. IF it is safe to do so, turtles can be helped across the road, however, please remember to move the turtle in the same direction that it is heading. They have very long necks, so be careful if moving them because they can deliver a powerful bite, but they will be most thankful for your assistance in crossing scary roads!

How to Address Landscaping Issues at Your Home
Approaching landscaping ground personnel directly will NOT resolve outstanding issues, as they follow directions from project managers. For prompt resolution, please use the following methods:
- Reach out to your Management team for your particular community
- Those of you in a service area run by the Master Association, please feel free to email hoa@babcockranch.com or call the office directly at 941-676-7191.
- For sub-associations (Babcock National, Crescent Grove, The Preserves, Edgewater Shores, Northridge, etc.): Contact the respective entities as they have their own landscaping contracts for those areas.
- Use the ORANGE "work order" button on the website.
- Submissions are reviewed daily by the Master Association Landscape Manager.
- Urgent issues are prioritized, and the Landscape Manager forwards them to the respective teams for sub-associations.
- Keep in mind that a sub-association may ALSO have its own work order system that you could use.

Registering for Events
Registering for events is essential because it helps the Lifestyle Team prepare for events and ensures there is enough food, favors, and activities for everyone who attends. It also helps them gauge interest in events so they can plan accordingly. While it's not mandatory for free events or events with plenty of space, it's still a good idea to register if you plan on attending. However, registration is required for paid events and events with limited space. So, make sure to register in advance to secure your spot and ensure a seamless event experience!
