With Gratitude

.

In last month's issue (you can find it HERE), I made a controversial announcement that I knew would result in some of our followers unsubscribing. It was a risk I was willing to take, because with the current fascist rule in America, I could longer support the ethos of keeping politics and spirituality in separate silos. As expected, there were some unsubscribes, but not as many as I expected.

I also received a few angry emails from MAGA folks, again, as expected, but to my delight, I also received an onslaught of support... dozens of emails thanking me for speaking out on behalf of sanity, human rights, the rule of law and the constitution. So I thank you all for that support, and will continue to have a "sacred activism" section in the newlsetter each month.

I welcome your comments, and hope you'll respond to the survey below...

END-OF-LIFE AND BEREAVEMENT

Legendary Hospice Expert Barbara Karnes, RN

 LISTEN HERE

Almost everyone who's worked in hospice or has had a loved one in hospice care has seen "the little blue book" written by the legendary Barbara Karnes RN. Our most recent Ask Doctor Death podcast features an interview with Barbara, and we hope you'll take a moment to listen and share it with friends.

How Grieving Changes the Brain

Few of us will make it through life without losing someone we love. Mary-Frances O’Connor, PhD, of the University of Arizona, discusses how neuroscience can help us to better understand grief and resilience after loss, why grief is different from depression, effective therapy for grief, whether it’s possible to experience grief over the death of a celebrity, and how to support people when they are grieving. SACRED ACTIVISM

Grieving America

By John Pavlovitz

"I know you feel something breaking inside lately; an invisible fracture that only you're fully aware of. I know the way you walk away from conversations with people you once relied on for wisdom and clarity and compassion, doubting your own sanity because you no longer recognize those things in them and worry you may be overreacting. Iknow the way you feel internally estranged from the friends, coworkers, family members, and neighbors you used to find affinity with, and you wonder if you're losing your mind..." READ MORE...

Toxic Empathy?

When Bishop Mariann Budde stood in the pulpit at the Washington National Cathedral and asked President Donald Trump to show mercy on migrants, she seemed to be treading on firm theological ground. But evangelical pastor Joe Rigney said, “When it comes to upholding strict standards of justice, empathy is a liability, not an asset.” READ MORE...

Orthodox and LGBTQ+

“I have not found a place where I am comfortable being both Jewish and queer,” said Spanjer. “In the Jewish spaces, you never know how someone’s gonna think about the queer stuff, and in the queer spaces you never know how someone’s gonna think about the religious stuff. And to me, these aren’t diametrically opposed.”

Psilocybin Sessions for End-of-Life Care

April 3, 2025, 11:30 am -1:30 pm PACIFIC TIME

2 CEU credit hours

This workshop with Dr. Lindsey Lerner, a licensed clinical psychologist, licensed psilocybin facilitator, and death doula, focuses on the emerging field of psilocybin-assisted sessions for individuals facing terminal diagnoses and end of life care.

Psilocybin has shown promising results in providing relief from existential distress, anxiety, depression, and fear in patients with life-limiting conditions. Participants will explore the clinical research, ethical considerations, and practical applications of psilocybin in end-of-life care settings.

Way Off-Topic: MERU

From the editor: For some inexplicable reason, I have lately fallen in love with documentaries about mountain climbing. I honesly have no idea why, but these films have captured my heart and my imagination, even though I've never felt drawn to this kind of activity in real life, and only have one friend who's ever done it, and he had an NDE in the process (Peter Panagore... check out his amazing story).

That said, I want to introduce you to MERU. It's a mind-blowing film that has won tons of awards, and I love sharing it with people (I've watched it three times now). Find it on Amazon Prime and many other streaming services.
