Advent Greetings From...

Our Advent theme this year is ‘Advent Greetings From…’ and each week members and groups from our congregation representing various sectors of our life together will light the Advent wreath and lead us in our liturgy. Every church and every member here is God’s living letter to the world bearing witness to the good news of Jesus Christ and calling us all to watch and wait for Christ’s return. From the prophets to John the Baptist to Mary and the whole chaotic scene at the nativity to all of us, we will receive greetings each week of Advent as we watch and wait for the Christ child.

Advent Devotionals

This year our SCAPC devotional writers explore the Christmas story from the perspective of different characters, sharing with us postcards of their experiences and inviting us to join the journey to Bethlehem. Each devotional is accompanied with inspiring art by our members. Printed books will be available at the entrances to the Sanctuary and Chapel and online at this link.

Advent Giving Drive:

What to Bring Sunday

Help us share kindness and love with our neighbors this season by bringing donations to church each week. For the first week, beginning Sunday, we are collecting cold weather accessories (hats, gloves, scarves, socks, etc.) to support those effected by Hurricane Helene in North Carolina.

Advent Sunday School Class

Beginning this Sunday, join us as we dive into each Sunday’s sermon text during Advent, exploring historical, contextual, and linguistic themes in select Messianic readings that lead up to the birth of Christ. Class will be led by Sandra Cabrina Jenkins and Ashley Brown and will meet in the Land Building Riverside Room and via Zoom.

New Book Studies

The CBD Breakfast Group meets weekly on Wednesdays at 8 a.m. at Bittersweet Confections, 725 Magazine Street, and all are welcome. They have begun a study on Christ and Culture by H. Richard Niebuhr. Contact Larry Hamric with any questions.

The Spiritually Hungry Women's Group meets weekly on Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. in the Land Building and via Zoom. All are welcome, and you can email Beth Poe with any questions. The group has begun a study of Between the Dark and Daylight: Embracing the Contradictions of Life by Benedictine Nun and spiritual leader, Joan Chittister.

Barbara Brown Taylor writes: “Here, at last, is a book for those ready to make peace with the unsolvable riddles of present-day life.”

Richard Rohr observes: “As always, Joan offers the right and needed words. She well describes those liminal spaces wherein human beings best grow and become their best selves. She could never describe them so well if she had not walked through them herself.”

SCAPC 101

Our next SCAPC 101 will be held on Sunday, December 8 from 9:30-10:15 a.m. in the Phifer Library. This class is designed as an orientation for new members and visitors interested in joining our church...or anyone wishing to learn more about SCAPC! We will talk about our basic beliefs as Presbyterians, the history of SCAPC, and how you can get involved in its ministries. Learn more in the meantime by visiting our membership page.

Congregational Meeting

A brief congregational meeting will be held on Sunday, December 1 following the 10:30 a.m. service in the Sanctuary for the purpose of electing two members to serve in the Elder Class of 2027.

The Latest from The Aden Program

Last week, participants, volunteers and staff of SCAPC's Aden Program for elder care enjoyed a festive Thanksgiving party!

A New Pilgrimage to Scotland

Dwelling in the Mystery of God:

A Spiritual Pilgrimage to Mull and Iona

Chris Currie, Senior Pastor, and Miriam Hollar, Parish Associate for Pastoral Care, will be leading a pilgrimage to the Isles of Mull and Iona on June 19-26, 2025. The focus will be on deepening our relationship with God through various spiritual exercises and day trips. Through individual practices, designed for each participant, and corporate worship and discussion, we will take the time we often do not have to be still and explore the mystery of God. Day trips will include two worship services with the Iona community as well as a half-day walk on the island, the Lochbuie Standing Stones, and an excursion to the Isle of Staffa to see the puffins. Our accommodation will be at a beautiful farm along a loch on Mull with meals prepared by an expert local chef. Sacred Earth, Sacred Soul by J. Philip Newell will be our core guide and will be discussed in a Sunday School class that will be held in April.

Deposits ($500/each) are due on December 1 and can be paid by check to SCAPC with 'Scotland' in the memo. Further information and any questions can be directed to Miriam Hollar.

Genesis Sunday School Class Recordings

The "Genesis" adult Sunday School class, which examined the first Biblical stories in a new light, concluded this past Sunday. For recordings of all ten classes, visit our Sunday School page.
