As we step into this splendid season, the Redwood Coast Village community is excited to celebrate the countless opportunities for social activities and outdoor adventures that spring brings. From lively gatherings to serene strolls in nature. May is a perfect time for our seniors to engage, connect, and thrive. Let’s embrace this month with optimism, as we look forward to a variety of enriching events and programs designed to enhance the quality of life for older adults. Remember, nurturing our mental well-being and fostering social connections is essential, especially in this vibrant time of year. We invite you to join us in participating in community events, as together we promote a sense of belonging and joy for seniors in the Eureka area. Let's make this May a month to remember!

Sharing a Home as an Older Adult
“I laugh more since Carol moved in,” says Lois, 77, of McKinleyville. Carol, 68, appreciates that Lois “respects me as an individual.” The two have shared a home for almost 3 years, finding comfort, security, and mutual care in their arrangement.
Other Humboldt County residents who have come to share a space later in life expressed gratitude for their home-mate, who brought them more connectedness, stability, flexibility, freedom, and genuine care.
Ken, 81, and Rob, 67, met just over a year ago. Now housemates in Cutten, they value the small gestures—Rob’s thoughtfulness and Ken’s hospitality—and bond over shared interests like sports and old movies.
Even independent individuals find companionship rewarding. Michael, 74, of Eureka, thought he was better off alone after caring for family for years. An ad for Homeshare led him to Eduardo, 32, who is often busy outside the home. While he truly enjoys his company, he also savors the intermittent moments of solitude.
Delle, 79, rents a room to Melody, 61, in Arcata. The extra income helps Delle with alternative healthcare costs, while Melody appreciates the shared resources and support. “It would be difficult for me… having my own apartment and paying everything myself,” she said.
Northcoast Homeshare, a program of the Area 1 Agency on Aging (A1AA), matches older adults with housemates, benefiting both by making housing more affordable and companionship more accessible. The program screens and advises both parties to ensure a good fit. According to Rob, “the groundwork was fantastic”, and for Melody, “it has been a godsend.”
If you or someone you know could benefit from the free, local, in-person housemate-matching services, you can reach out to Julie, Homeshare and Housing Coordinator, at homeshare@a1aa.org or 707-442-3763. All inquiries welcome!
