A Prayer As Memorial Day Nears

-Margaret Grunkibbin,

Chaplain, U.S. House of Representatives

O God, our refuge and our strength, a very present help in times of discord and trouble:

Mountains crumble, waters rage, nations roar, and yet we need not be afraid, for even now you abide with us in these times of great discord, uncertainty, and unrest…

So help us, God, to find you in the midst of us. So help us, God, to see your gracious plan even in the events of these days. So help us, God, to serve you and this nation with Godliness and dignity. We lay before you the gifts of our hopes, our dreams, our deliberations, and our debates, that you would be revealed and exalted among the people.

Sunday School

Please note that there will be no Sunday School this Sunday, May 26. We will resume on June 2 with an adult class, "Weird Things Presbyterians Believe" at 8:30 a.m. before the single 9:30 Summer Sundays service.

The recording of last Sunday's Philippians and Galatians class can be found at this link.

YAF Sunset Kayaking Cruise

YAF (Young Adults & Families) are planning a sunset kayaking cruise on Bayou St. John on Saturday, June 1 starting at 5:30 p.m.! All kayaks and gear will be provided by Big Easy Bayou, and no prior kayaking experience is required. Spots are limited to 15 people so please RSVP by paying at this link or on the SCAPC app by Monday, May 27 to reserve your kayak! $25 per kayaker, adults only please.

Books for Young Children in Malawi

Children in developing countries have little access to books which they love. The STAIR (Start the Adventure in Reading) program at SCAPC donated approximately 250 books to be brought to Malawi by two medical missionaries, Drs. Brigid O'Brien and Jacob Todd, husband and wife, and former pediatric infectious diseases students of Dr. Russell Steele at Tulane Medical School. Pictured are Dr. O'Brien, Dr. Todd, their two-year old son Blaise, David Grissett, chairman of the Global Ministry Committee, and Dr. Russell Steele, member of the Global Ministry Committee.

Raintree Day of Service

The May 18th rain did not stop the joy of making bracelets and playing BINGO at Raintree Children and Family Services. SCAPC Community Ministry Committee and Presbyterian Women joined together to sponsor a field day of fun, staged inside. The weather brightened just in time to grill hamburgers and hot dogs followed by cake and ice cream. Smiling from a successful event are SCAPC members (from top): Karen Donaldson, Kathy Randall, Ann Van Horn, Lorrie Powel, Nancy Jane Carson, Sheila Schwartzmann, Sarah Chancellor-Watson, Greg Beuerman and Lee Randall. (Not pictured: Laura Avery)

Ordination of Ashley Brown

Last Sunday, SCAPC's own Pastoral Resident, Ashley Brown, was ordained by members of the Presbytery of South Louisiana as Minister of the Word and Sacrament! Led by pastor friends from near and far, the service included a statement and prayer of ordination, laying on of hands by fellow elders, signing of the Book of Obligations, and a presentation of stoles. The service culminated in Ashley's officiating communion. Ashley incorporated a celebration of Pentecost by encouraging participants to don red accoutrements, making for a colorful and joyful service. Presbyterian Women entertained afterwards with a reception in Frampton Fellowship Hall.

YAF's Celebrate Ashley

Members of YAF (Young Adults & Families) took Ashley Brown out to a celebratory dinner in honor of her ordination! Pictured back row from left are Jennifer Keene, Brittany Colson, Mary Carroll Waller, Ashley, Tyler Wheeler, and Shelby Sundmaker; and front row are Jacob Bruno and Matt McCann.

Celebrating Bonnie & Jim

At our last Wednesday Night Out of the year, Bonnie and Jim Hobden were recognized with a standing ovation for their combined 45 years of service as WNO chefs extraordinaire! Their dedicated kitchen crew members were recognized for their talents as well. Our special thanks go out to Ann Byerly, Donna and Dick Davis, Matt McCann, Mary Lou O'Keefe and Ann Van Horn!
