Ontario sets new planning rules intended to boost homebuilding
Ontario’s housing minister announced a new set of planning rules, which he said will set the stage for a “long-term building boom.”
Paul Calandra announced the new Provincial Planning Statement at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario conference, telling the municipal leaders in attendance that it will give them more tools and flexibility.

Ontario accepting applications for municipal core asset repairs, upgrades
The Ontario government is now accepting applications for funding to build, maintain, and repair core assets such as municipal roads, bridges and culverts that will support the construction of new homes.
The funding is under the $400 million Housing-Enabling Core Servicing stream of the $1 billion Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program.

Residential Sector Drives Growth in Building Construction
Statistics Canada reports that investment in building construction saw a notable increase of 2.8% in June, reaching $21.4 billion, marking a significant rise following a modest 0.8% growth in May. These gains partially reflect the record-setting $13.4 billion in total building permits issued in April, as current investment levels are often driven by permits issued in preceding months.
Residential Sector Drives Growth
The June uptick in construction investment was primarily fueled by the residential sector, which surged by 3.8%, totaling $15.0 billion.

Diamond Schmitt book provides glimpse behind the curtain of performance venues
Anew book by Diamond Schmitt Architects provides detailed designs, photos and illustrations of the firm’s architectural approach to designing performing arts venues in Canada and around the world.
Donald Schmitt, founding principal at the firm, said the firm has designed more than 60 performing arts spaces globally.
While surveying the projects for the book called SET PIECES: Architecture for the Performing Arts in Fifteen Fragments, the team realized they didn’t want to produce a conventional architectural monograph.

July LFS data finds construction operating at seasonally high levels
The latest data from Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey (LFS) suggest that the construction industry is once again operating at a high level.
LFS data for July 2024 find construction employment at 1,644,200 – an increase of 14,400 workers, or 0.9% above the figures reported in July 2023. The industry’s labour force, meanwhile, grew by 8,000 workers, or 0.5%, during this same period.
These trends combined to lower the construction industry’s unemployment rate by 0.4 percentage points from a year ago, to 3.9%.

EllisDon continues supporting Paralympic excellence
