As Labor Day approaches and the peak recreation season winds down, I always feel a mix of emotions. The lively hustle at Riddle Point Park and the activity on the lake are a joy to witness, yet the slower pace ahead offers our staff some much-needed breathing room.
This year’s season started later than usual due to persistent rain. On Memorial Day weekend, nearly half the docks sat empty, and the lake was unusually calm. By July, Riddle Point Park traffic was nearly 1,000 cars behind prior years. As we know, lake recreation depends heavily on the weather, and Mother Nature had her own plans.
Fortunately, once the weekends turned sunny, activity picked up quickly. An unexpected boost came when Lake Monroe’s beaches remained closed due to high water levels, making Riddle Point Park a destination for many first-time visitors. We’ve heard countless praises from new guests discovering the beauty of Lake Lemon. Despite the slow start, this has become one of our top two years for park attendance in the past decade.
I’m grateful for the honest and open dialogue this year as we addressed wake surfing. Our community came together in compromise, protecting the lake’s health while supporting the recreation so many enjoy.
Finally, I want to recognize our Operations Supervisor, Ross Carlson, for his four seasons of service to LLCD. Ross is leaving this month to further his career. If you see him around the park, lake, or in town, please thank him for all he’s done to support our community.
A pleasure to serve,
Adam Casey
