Last Chance to Submit Names
Honoring our Deceased Loved Ones
Names for All Saints Day & All Souls' Day
It is our tradition to honor our departed loved ones by reading their names at the All Saints and All Souls services. This year we will be honoring our loved ones a little differently. We are inviting you to bring photos of lost loved ones to hold up during the services where there will be time(s) of remembrance.
We will be celebrating All Souls' Day at our Friday Morning Contemplative Eucharist on Friday October 30 at 8:30am where we will read all the names of our loved ones aloud. On All Saints Day at our 10am & 5pm services on Sunday November 1 we will print their names in the bulletin and have a moment of extended silence in remembrance. Please email or call the office with the names of people you want us to read aloud and/or printed during these services. Please include phonetic spelling so we can be sure to pronounce them correctly at the Friday service.
Please have your names submitted by 5pm Wednesday, October 28.

Book Reading with Marilyn McEntyre
Sunday November 15
Join us after coffee hour to hear Marilyn McEntyre read from and discuss her new book, As We Age: A Conversation.
Co-authored by Marilyn and a longtime colleague and friend, the conversation that unfolds in As We Age, beyond personal reflections, offers an invitation to readers to reflect on their own aging—what questions and challenges arise in the final season of life, and what unexpected pleasures. It ranges among memories of learning moments, passages from beloved books, observations about shifting friendships and family relationships, and speculations about death, dying, and what lies beyond that portal.

You can also give online or put cash in an envelope (you can find these in the pew pockets), mark it with "Food Gift Card" and put it in the plate on Sunday. Gifts from the Heart
Gifts from the Heart (GFTH) is back again for its 34th year at St. Michael’s!
The gift tags will be available starting Sunday, November 1, from 9:30 - 10 and 11:15 - 12. We have 130 gift tags this year. Please stop by to select your gift tag/s.
The program which provides Christmas gifts for children, seniors, and disabled adults began 39 years ago via the inspiration of a single CPS Social Worker. In 2026, multiple county agencies and community partners will bless over 3,000 people in Sacramento County with wonderful gifts. Each client’s social worker spends the time to learn what their clients need and desire and then shares that information with GFTH staff. Community partners like St. Michael’s do the rest until gifts are ready for pickup and delivery! This is such a fun and meaningful way to help our neighbors in need! They will experience a more joyful Christmas season because of our generosity.
Questions? Please direct any GFTH questions to Laura Quené or Holly Yue or contact the office.

Choral Masterworks
by Dr. John Cozza, Music Director
Ein deutches Requiem, Op. 45 by Brahms
A work particularly appropriate for All Souls'/Saints' Day also happens to be one of the greatest of all choral masterworks--A German Requiem, to Words of the Holy Scriptures, Op. 45 (German: Ein deutsches Requiem, nach Worten der heiligen Schrift) by Johannes Brahms, a large-scale work for chorus, orchestra, a soprano and a baritone soloist, composed between 1865 and 1868. It comprises seven movements, which together last 65 to 80 minutes, making this work Brahms's longest composition. A German Requiem is sacred but non-liturgical, and unlike a long tradition of the Latin Requiem, A German Requiem, as its title states, is a Requiem in the German language.
Brahms's mother died in February 1865, a loss that caused him much grief and may well have inspired Ein deutsches Requiem. Brahms's lingering feelings over Robert Schumann's death in July 1856 may also have been a motivation, though his reticence about such matters makes this uncertain. Brahms set out to compose a work that would comfort the living, without the fire and brimstone of such Latin Requiem texts as the Dies Irae ("Day of Wrath"). This he does so admirably, especially in the lone movement for solo soprano, Ihr habt nur Traurigkeit ("You have only sadness"), in which the soprano (=Brahms' mother?) sings the words from John 16:22: And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.

And here is a link to a wonderfully profound, spiritual performance by the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Herbert von Karajan, recorded live at the 1978 Salzburg Easter Festival

I hope this work moves you as much as it does me.

Mercy and Social Justice Committee
The Mercy and Social Justice Committee exists to provide St. Michael’s parishioners with opportunities to share God’s love and justice. We accomplish this by offering parishioners several ways to participate in outreach to our most vulnerable and marginalized neighbors. The last committee meeting for this year will be 7 – 8pm on November 2nd. We will be discussing our upcoming 2027 calendar as part See Terry Bridges if you are interested in attending as a guest.
