Dear Grovites,
Last weekend was truly memorable!
We kicked off the 150th Anniversary of Coconut Grove last Friday with a very special event on Fuller Street, followed by Saturday with a historic tour guided by HistoryMiami and Dr. Paul George that ended with a live performance by Grant Livingston.
On Sunday, the 39th King Mango Edition was a total success! Shout out to all the "strutters" for making the most of the parade. We really had an amazing time!
And as if that were not enough, this weekend the great events and surprises continue in Coconut Grove. On Saturday, bring your furry friends to Kennedy Park and get a free photograph of your pup, followed by an extraordinary concert performed by the Miami Symphony at Peacock Park with the best of pops and classics.
The best is yet to come... so keep checking the calendar to be "in on" the fun and joy that is coming your way.
We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Kicking Off the Month-long Celebration of the 150th Anniversary

Happy Birthday Coconut Grove
Last Friday night, we gathered to celebrate a fabulous Event kicking off Coconut Grove’s 150th Birthday. The party on Fuller Street started with a re-enactment of early Grove settlers, performers, historical photos, birthday cake and fun for the family.
Friends and neighbors gathered to hear the stories of those who pioneered the settlement of Coconut Grove. And Dr. Horace Porter, the Postmaster, invited the party-goers to commemorate the application for the post office on January 6th, 1873. You only turn 150 once!

|
The celebration of Coconut Grove’s role as Miami’s legacy village kicked off with Postcards to the Future in honor of
January 6, 1873, when Dr. Horace Porter applied and was granted a post office for Coconut Grove.
Event attendees wrote themselves postcards from Coconut Grove with aspirations for the upcoming year, that will be mailed to them at a future date,
as a reminder of their intentions for 2023.

Happy Birthday Coconut Grove
All the attendees had the privilege of singing happy birthday to the neighborhood we love so much and enjoying delicious Grove Heritage cupcakes.
Over the course of the year, we will be bringing creative and whimsical ways to celebrate the historical treasures of our community with Grove Heritage themed events held on a monthly basis. This will no doubt be a year to remember for we have so much to celebrate here in the Grove!

HistoryMiami Walking Tour with Dr. Paul George
On Saturday morning, we sponsored a special tour guided by the museum’s Coordinator of Education Programs and Community Engagement, Ingrid E. Argueta, and Resident Historian, Dr. Paul S. George.
They toured this historic area and discussed the lives of some of the Grove’s earliest settlers, including EWF Stirrup and Mariah Brown. We also had the pleasure of visiting the Barnacle, Ralph Munroe’s home, followed by a Live Performance by Grant Livingston.

King Mango Strut 2023 - What an Epic Day in Coconut Grove!
|
|
|
Last Sunday, the streets of Coconut Grove, after a 2 year hiatus, became a colorful arena for humor and satire. The King Mango Strut is a fun event for people of all ages.
For almost 40 years Miamians have been keeping this parade alive, making it more and more popular every year.
If you missed out on this year's event, or want to relive some of the fun moments, check out the video section at the end.

The Coconut Grove BID float was inspired by Coconut Grove's 150th Anniversary.
We had a giant "cake", historical characters, Bahamian Junkanoo performers and the most important part: The Spirit of Celebration.
Our team brought all generations together to dance and march together in honor of our beloved community.

|
|
|
|
The Bahamian Junkanoo, The School of Rock of Coconut Grove, Miami Bloco, and more performers made the attendees dance with their contagious rhythms and energy.
Strains of Happy Birthday and stilt dancers brought out the Bahamian-inspired revelry. The crowd cheered on and joined us in singing Happy Birthday to Coconut Grove.
What a wonderful and colorful way to kick off a year full of celebrations. So stay tuned... The fun is just beginning!
