THIS WEEK IN HOUSTON

May 1–4, 2025

The city is buzzing this week with openings all over — from Downtown to the East End — plus a major block party on Mid Main and a full day of artist talks and final looks at Lawndale’s spring shows. And, the Houston Center for Photography has a timely show titled H-Town Hurting by Robin North that opens today during gallery hours (it’s on view through May 25).

Houstonians — here’s another chance to catch our award-winning short documentary. The Houston Film Commission’s First Thursdays: Short Films series at Brasil Café spotlights director Alessandro Gentile, screening three of his works: Razón de Ser: Luis C. Garza, Della, and Lodo. Don’t miss this free outdoor screening — Alessandro joins live via Zoom for a post-film Q&A.

🎶 Heads up: There’s still time to grab donation-based tickets for Bach Society Houston’s Solo Cantatas concert next Saturday, May 10. Soprano Renée Rybolt and baritone Drew Santini perform exquisite vocal works by J.S. Bach — scroll down for details.

🎉 Looking Ahead: I’m hosting an intimate art salon later this month to thank those who’ve supported this newsletter over the past year. Want an invite? Show your support by giving what you can
