Roadless Rule's Future

Secretary of Agriculture Brook Rollins announced on August 18 that the U.S. Forest Service has filed a proposed rule to rescind in its entirety the national 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule.

The agency will seek public comment on the proposal and draft of the environmental impact statement filed earlier this week in the Federal Register. The rescission removes national designation of roadless areas but does not mandate timber cutting or road construction. The action removes regulatory burden and sends decisions about roadless areas to the local national forest managers.

To comment on the proposed rule and draft environmental impact statement, go to Regulations.gov. The public comment period has been extended, and all comments must be received by midnight on October 6.

Upcoming CFM Events

Since 1992, Share the Harvest has connected Missouri hunters, meat processors, food banks, shelters, and community organizations to provide nutritious venison to families facing food insecurity. This program transforms donated deer into lean ground venison, which is distributed statewide. In recent years, hunters have donated about 5,000 deer annually, but the need continues to grow. Nearly 800,000 Missourians experienced food insecurity in 2025, increasing demand on food assistance programs. With support from donors, partners, and sponsors, Share the Harvest's goal for this year is 6,500 deer. Every contribution helps cover processing costs, ensuring more donated venison reaches families in need. Together, we can strengthen food security, support conservation, and continue Missouri's proud tradition of neighbors helping neighbors. Donate today and help turn Missouri's harvest into hope.

The Trail State

A new documentary is making its way to Missouri. The Trail State shares the story of how Missouri built the Katy Trail, mile by mile and town by town. A series of public screenings is available starting September 11th at the State Historical Society of Missouri and continuing through October.

Join us at Runge Nature Center in Jefferson City on Tuesday, October 6, at 6:30 p.m. for a free showing of The Trail State, a one-hour documentary celebrating Missouri’s trails and outdoor heritage. The event is free and open to the public, so bring a friend and come enjoy the film with us!

Missouri State Employee Charitable Campaign

The Missouri State Employee Charitable Campaign (MSECC) is an initiative allowing state employees to donate to nonprofit organizations. Typically held from September to November, it supports various causes, fostering community support and positive impact across the state. MSECC is a great opportunity for State employees to contribute to their favorite non-profits, like CFM, through a monthly payroll deduction or a one-time gift. State employees can use ID #8499 to donate to CFM.

Migration of the Monarchs

The annual migration of the monarch butterfly is approaching! There are a few monarchs moving south, and several roost sites have been reported in North Central Missouri. You can witness a small portion of this spectacle in your backyard if you have planted some wildflowers like New England Aster and Showy Goldenrod! It doesn't take much to get the monarchs to come in. A hundred square feet of the aster or a dozen showy goldenrod will get them there. Plant in full sun, near a tree, and they will likely roost in the tree at night after feeding on your wildflowers!

To learn more about gardening with native plants visit Guide for Beginning Native Plant Gardeners - Grow Native! Or Plant A Garden - Deep Roots.

Note: there are 5 monarchs and one skipper on the showy goldenrod blossom.
