Celebrating Black History Month with the TaSH

The Village sponsored a Black History Month celebration at the TaSH this month with a free barbecue tasting by local restaurant, PikNik Barbecue, and music by jazz saxophonist Bryant Jackson. Thanks to all who came out to celebrate and to Trustee Mitchell for spearheading the event. It is not too late to check out the Black History Month art exhibit at the Warner Library, open until February 28 and featuring works by Donald Whitely, Ella Hall and Ron Brown.

Con Edison is Returning to Tarrytown

Con Edison is resuming work in Tarrytown and will begin its next gas main replacement project on Monday on Altamont, Fairview and Rosehill. They were supposed to begin last week but were delayed due to weather. We can expect this project to last for two months. Following completion, they will do rough road restoration and will fully pave later in the year. We will provide more detailed information when we have it.

Safe Streets for All: Please Take the Survey!

The Village of Tarrytown, Village of Sleepy Hollow, and the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns are working together over the next year to develop a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan to prevent serious injury and death on roadways.

The Plan will identify our community's traffic safety concerns, locations and intersections to address, and possible solutions to employ. Input from residents and traffic collision data will result in an implementation plan to guide future investments, which will also create additional funding opportunities to promote traffic safety.

There are multiple ways for community members to help inform the plan:

1) Take the survey and help identify dangerous intersections and sections of roadway in the community.

2) Attend two public meetings. The first will take place on Thursday, March 20 at the Tarrytown Senior Center from 6 - 8pm. More details to follow.

3) Connect with the team putting the plan together at one of numerous engagement events happening this year.

The Project Page is posted on the Village website and will be updated as the project progresses.

Project Mover Update

In November 2024, the Village Board voted to move forward with implementing the Project Mover electric bikeshare network in the Village. This grant-funded project began in the Village of Ossining in August 2024, and will be rolling out to neighboring communities in 2025 including the following: Sleepy Hollow, Dobbs Ferry, Croton-on-Hudson, Town of Ossining.

After receiving feedback from a community survey in 2024 and touring sites with the program operators, the following sites are expected to be included in the initial launch:

  1. Metro North Station
  2. Pierson Park
  3. Main Street Mini-Lot
  4. Citibank Parking Lot
  5. McKeel Parking Lot
  6. Warner Library
  7. Neperan Lakes Parking Lot
  8. Sleepy Hollow Conference Center/JCC
  9. Mario Cuomo Bridge Entryway (pending approval from Thruway Authority)

We expect this program to be launched in Spring/Summer 2025. The program model is flexible, so if the above bikeshare sites are not working, they can be moved to alternative locations. If the program is popular and additional sites are needed, they can be considered in Phase 2 of the roll out. More information about Project Mover can be found on the Village website and on the Project Mover page.

Volunteer Opportunities

The Village of Tarrytown benefits from engaged, caring, and talented residents who volunteer their time and expertise to help create the community they want to inhabit. There are many opportunities to serve, whether contributing to the vision and development of public spaces, environmental issues, housing affordability, transportation challenges or recreation programs. Find out more about the Village’s many Boards and Committees and fill out a volunteer application by visiting: tarrytownny.gov/volunteer-to-serve

For all those who apply to serve on a Committee, because vacancies may be limited, we would like to include you on a general volunteer list for one-off events that may arise. Please indicate in your application whether you are willing to be contacted if the need arises.

Other Volunteer Opportunities

Village Committees are not the only way to give back to your community. There are lots of civic groups in Tarrytown doing important work. Like TEAC, the Friends of the Riverwalk are looking for volunteers to help maintain the plantings on the waterfront. Many more organizations are listed in the Volunteer Directory that has been assembled by the Community Coalition and Kids Club of the Tarrytowns.
