Esteemed Religions for Peace Leaders and Partners,

During the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago, Illinois, the Religions for Peace International Youth Committee (IYC) will be organising and presenting on three panels:

Gender-Based Violence: A Human Rights Issue

Monday, 14 August 2023, 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm CDT

This session focuses specifically on how gender-based violence (GBV) is exacerbated by religious patriarchy, political climates, and social conditions that affect women and the girl child, especially, worldwide. IYC members present on and articulate the most dire needs of women and the girl child in eight regions around the world Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, South East Asia, North America, Europe, and the Middle East. After this, they break the audience into 5 groups and facilitate discussions on better solutions to address GBV/human rights infractions exacerbated by theological dogma. This prepares the participants for the second session in this series, where the Religions for Peace International Youth Committee Members lead another session on creating strategic plans of action to better address and collaborate multi-religiously on GBV issues worldwide.

The Role of Multi-Religious Youth Engagement to Promote the Human Rights of the Women and the Girl-Child

Monday, 14 August 2023, 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm CDT

This session from the Religions for Peace International Youth Committee piggybacks off of the first session that explores how religious patriarchy, as well as political and economic climates exacerbate the human rights infractions of women and girls worldwide. With learnings from the first session, this session entails IYC Members as facilitators in creating more strategic planning in addressing these issues and structuring some suggested tangible plans of actions that participants can take back to their own communities and attempt to implement. The idea is to empower young leaders to work within their own cultural and religious contexts that enable them to continue the work they are already doing in their own communities, but with better tools and ideas that are brought forth by these two sessions. This session involves several group activities and several collaborative efforts of all who attend.

Youth and Interfaith Peacebuilding - Practices and Examples from Around the World

Thursday, 17 August 2023, 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm CDT

The session addresses youth endeavors in interfaith peacebuilding while showcasing practices from various parts of the world. Presenters are all members of the Religions for Peace International Youth Committee and are all working within the context of interreligious collaboration and peacebuilding - from conflict to post-conflict societies. During the session, IYC members are presenting concrete actions and work they have been doing in their respective communities to contribute to interfaith dialogue and peace at large. They share the best practices they have learned in relation to the work they do and how they overcame the challenges faced. They also pay special attention to the necessity of involving youth in interreligious collaborative efforts and peacebuilding processes with an emphasis on intergenerational cooperation.

In addition to attending these panels, we invite you to stop by the Religions for Peace booth in the conference hall, located in space #347, and become acquainted with our International Youth Committee, learn more about Religions for Peace, and support our movement!
