Dear Residents -

As in past years, I will be taking a break from writing an introduction to my weekly newsletter for the summer. Before I do, however, I want to highlight the exciting celebrations planned for America's 250th Birthday.

The festivities begin on Thursday, July 2, when the Village of Nyack kicks off the celebration with classic cars, a vintage radio show, a 1960s band review show, and an outdoor movie.

On Friday, July 3, the Nyack celebration continues with a Kids' Freedom Zone in Memorial Park, a public reading of the Declaration of Independence at Hezekiah Easter Veterans Memorial Square, live entertainment, and a spectacular fireworks display. The Mayor has promised an unforgettable show, so be sure to head to Nyack for two days of patriotic fun.

Then, on Saturday, July 4, the Town of Orangetown takes center stage.

The day begins at 9 am with a ceremonial reading of the Declaration of Independence by the Knights of Columbus in front of the William O. Schaefer Elementary School. At 10 am, the Orangetown USA250 Parade steps off, traveling along Lester Drive to Independence Avenue and then to Western Highway before finishing at the German Masonic Park.

At 11:45 am, the festival officially begins with an opening ceremony, followed by hours of live music featuring Joe D'Urso & Stone Caravan, Georgia 5, and Eighth Grade Science. Attendees will enter beneath a 20-foot by 30-foot American flag, generously provided by O'Sullivan Tree Care, creating a truly unforgettable entrance to the celebration.

Attendees will be encouraged to walk to downtown Tappan to visit such historic sites as the DeWint House, the Old ‘76 House, and the Tappan Reformed Church. While there, they will see the Field of Honor—a display of 290+ American Flags in a patriotic tribute to all heroes, from our military and first responders to frontline workers and 9/11 victims. Join us in honoring our heroes, while celebrating 250 years of American freedom, service, sacrifice, and resilience.

The day concludes with a hometown tradition: fireworks at the Central Avenue Field in Pearl River, hosted by the Pearl River Park & Activity Committee. In honor of America’s Semiquincentennial, this year’s show promises to be bigger than ever.

Wherever you celebrate, I hope you enjoy these wonderful community events, spend time with family and friends, and make memories that will last a lifetime.

On behalf of everyone at the Town of Orangetown, I wish you a safe, happy, and memorable summer.

Happy 250th Birthday, America!

Regards,

Teresa M. Kenny

School's Out for Summer – Pedestrian Safety Reminder

With school out for the summer, children will be spending more time outdoors walking, biking, playing in neighborhoods, and visiting parks and community events. Drivers should expect increased pedestrian activity throughout the day and exercise extra caution in residential areas.

Summer Safety Tips from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

  • Slow down in neighborhoods, near parks, playgrounds, and recreation areas.
  • Watch for children who may unexpectedly enter the roadway while playing or riding bicycles.
  • Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and be prepared to stop when turning at intersections.
  • Never drive distracted—put down the phone and focus on the road.
  • Be especially cautious when backing out of driveways and parking spaces.
  • Encourage children to use sidewalks and crosswalks whenever available.
  • Remind children to look left-right-left before crossing and to make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the street.
  • Wear helmets when riding bicycles, scooters, and skateboards.
