Did you know?

Lawyers within their first 10 years of practice are the most at risk for mental health struggles and problematic substance use.

A major 2016 study published in the Journal of Addiction Medicine — The Prevalence of Substance Use and Other Mental Health Concerns Among American Attorneys by Krill, Johnson, and Albert — surveyed nearly 13,000 practicing attorneys across the U.S. The study found that:

  • 28% of attorneys reported experiencing depression symptoms.
  • 19% reported symptoms of anxiety.
  • 21% qualified as problem drinkers — but rates were significantly higher among lawyers with 10 or fewer years of experience.

In fact, younger and early-career lawyers reported the highest levels of drinking problems, depression, and anxiety compared to their mid-career or senior colleagues. The study emphasized that the culture of law, combined with the high-pressure environment of early practice (long hours, billable hour demands, competitiveness, and perfectionism expectations), creates a critical window where early intervention can make a lasting difference.

Creating early support networks, offering mentorship, encouraging work-life balance, and normalizing help-seeking behavior can dramatically change a lawyer’s professional and personal trajectory — and improve retention in the profession.

Judicial Wellness Program (NMJWP)

The pressures of working in the legal field can take a significant toll on mental health. Long hours, high expectations and the constant demand for perfection can lead to burnout—where emotional exhaustion and reduced performance take hold. Recognizing the signs early is key to preventing it from overwhelming you. Common signs of burnout include feelings of detachment, difficulty concentrating and a lack of motivation. If you’re experiencing these symptoms, it’s important to address them before they affect your personal and professional life. Do not hesitate to seek support from colleagues, friends or a mental health professional. No one should navigate these challenges alone.

Here is an article that explains ways to prevent burnout: https://www.dcbar.org/news-events/publications/d-c-bar-blog/six-ways-d-c-lawyers-can-stave-off-burnout

Professional Development Program (PDP)

In addition to other resources, the Professional Development Program has developed and posted to the State Bar website various checklists, forms, articles, and links to relevant resources to allow lawyers to follow best practices when engaged in succession planning, closing files, managing trust accounts, appearing before a tribunal in a virtual setting, and starting a small law firm. You can find them at the Professional Development Program tab on the State Bar of New Mexico’s website.
