Do You Even Bio?
The 2021-22 school year finds lots of activity on the third floor of the science building. Indeed, between Dr. Ortell, Mrs. Rellinger, and Dr. Domangue, we see over 50% of the student body in our biology courses fall term. Present fall offerings include Marine Biology (Ortell and Rellinger), Vet Med (Rellinger), Evolution (Rellinger), Classical Genetics (Ortell), Honors Bio and Anatomy & Physiology (Domangue). Each of your instructors brings a unique perspective to classes with Mrs. Rellinger stemming from a polar biochemistry background, Dr. Ortell with coastal microbial diversity, and Dr. Domangue stable isotope biogeochemistry. The years of collective science research your instructors have support student inquiry for their own research projects either through class projects or the Research Fellows Program. You’ll find biology students applying scientific methodology weekly during labs and term long like the A&P term project cumulating in a class symposium.

Your instructors are passionate about the subjects they teach. Mrs. Rellinger appreciates “the flexibility at ASMS to add new elective courses like Vet Med that allows for instructors to host alumni like 2015 graduate Madison Sharp, now at Auburn University vet school, to engage with the students about their careers and passions.” Dr. Ortell loves teaching microbial ecology because she gets to share her microbial passion with students and watch them become interested in microbes. Dr. Domangue was recently asked what the best part about her week was and it was being able to see all her students in person every day, enjoying the learning process.

Synergy among biology faculty means students can expect cohesion between class sections of the same course taught by different instructors. It also means students are synthesizing content into a weekly portfolio and this concept is used across classes.
If you like science, we encourage you to come have fun with some biology electives and your amazing biology instructors!

Around the ASMS Community
ASMS hosts Director of History Museum!
For our second Lunch and Learn, Ms. Frey teamed up with the History Club to host Ms. Meg Fowler, the Director of the History Museum of Mobile. Ms. Fowler discussed the workings of the Museum as well as upcoming projects like the new Clotilda experience in Africatown. She invited the History club to take a behind the scenes tour in the future and answered many questions about the Museum and her role as Director. Future projects and resources for our Research Fellows were also discussed.
Congratulations to Trinity Causey!
Trinity Causey has been selected to participate as a student in this fall’s Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Beaver Works Summer Institute (BWSI) in the virtual Girls Who Program Autonomous Cognitive Assistants! course across 8 Saturdays. She has already started her coursework.

ASMS has also had two other students participate in their summer program -- senior Lena Tran and recent graduate Emma Joly!
Light Up Lab
Last lab of the term means we learn AND have fun in Classical Genetics. Students applied their knowledge of genetics and laboratory skills to isolate the Green fluorescent Protein (GFP) produced by the jellyfish Aequorea victoria to create a glow in the dark necklace! (eyes closed for protection from the UV light).
ASMS Students Volunteer at Boo at Bellingrath!
ASMS Celebrates Unity Day!
Orange was chosen as the color to represent Unity Day because it is described as vibrant, warm, and inviting, and is commonly associated with safety and visibility.
The Great Pumpkin
SGA held a Spooky Scavenger Hunt where students hunted for pumpkins across campus!
WOW
Women of the World Club had a quest speaker Joan Duncan, from the Penelope House for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The event gave students an opportunity to discuss various issues regarding domestic violence.
