NC maternal death rate exceeds national rate
Last week, CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics released 2021 maternal mortality data showing increases in rates of maternal mortality and persisting disparities. This data provides the most recent look at maternal deaths (deaths during pregnancy and up to 42 days after the end of pregnancy) in the United States.
North Carolina’s maternal mortality rate is rising much faster than the national rate reported by the CDC on Thursday. The US maternal mortality rate in 2021 was 32.9 deaths per 100,000 live births, according to the CDC, up from 23.8 per 100,000 in 2020, and 20.1 per 100,000 in 2019.
