Greetings Friend! This May will be a month of transition – as we begin to inch our way back to in-person events. The San Francisco Bay Area Chapter will host a Paint/Sculpt-Out at Crissy Field on May 15, and one week later, we will open On Location in Malibu 2021, our first in-person exhibition in more than a year. Due to Covid-19 guidelines, however, access into the museum galleries will require reservations for timed entry, so check the museum's website before making the trip to Pepperdine University. Before the month is over, be sure to view the virtual exhibition for our first-ever Student Art Contest, presented in conjunction with Mars: An Artistic Mission. We were delighted to view the submissions by budding artists ages 3 to 19. And we are thankful to the art educators among our members – including Christopher and Jennifer Burgan and Nina Fabunmi – who encouraged their students to create and submit works for the contest. Virtual Demonstration: With Watercolorist Brenda Swenson

Date: Saturday, May 15 Time: 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. PT Location: Online via Zoom Tickets: CAC Members: $25 Non-Members: $35 Renowned watercolorist Brenda Swenson will demonstrate her technique of "negative painting." In this class, you will see how Swenson creates glowing lights by using transparent glazes and saturated color to carve out shapes in the negative space.

Date: Saturday, May 15 Time: 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. PT Location: Crissy Field – Warming Hut Tickets: Free San Francisco Bay Area Chapter Co-Chairs Ellen Howard and Paul Kratter invite you to join them for an in-person paint/sculpt-out at Crissy Field, the recreational paradise located in the famed Presidio. Crissy Fields offers breathtaking views of the Golden Gate Bridge as well as its beaches, trails, and open spaces.

The festivities will include a special virtual tour of the exhibition and break-out rooms with participating artists, which will certainly be fun for all in attendance!

Michael Obermeyer Malibu Twilight

On Location in Malibu 2021 Fredrick R. Weisman Museum of Art at Pepperdine University Website: californiaartclub.org/malibu Dates: May 22 – August 1 The eighth in a series that has been held every three years since 1999, this exhibition showcases one of the most picturesque regions in the nation with more than 80 paintings. Admission is free, but due to Covid-19 guidelines, reservations may be required. Check the museum website for the latest information.

Student Art Contest Exhibition for Mars: An Artistic Mission A Virtual Exhibition on the CAC Site Website: californiaartclub.org/studentexhibition Dates: Through May 31 In conjunction with Mars: An Artistic Mission, the California Art Club sponsored a Student Art Contest to encourage youth and teens, from pre-kindergarten to high school, to use traditional art techniques to create new artwork showcasing the Red Planet. Winners were identified in three categories: High School, Middle School and Pre-K/Elementary; and the most exemplary submissions are on display on our website.

Renewal & Rebirth: Excellence in Traditional Fine Art Competition A Virtual Exhibition on the CAC Site Website: californiaartclub.org/rebirth Dates: Through June 1 The first edition of our Excellence in Traditional Fine Art Competition, Renewal and Rebirth showcases nearly 50 paintings and sculptures that mark the arrival of Spring and the new life the season brings each year.
