Dear friends and neighbors,
As we close out Women's History Month, I am reflecting on the many powerful women who have shaped my life: my mother, of course, who lovingly set me on my path of service, my sisters who, also lovingly, taught me how to negotiate both the big and little things in life, and my amazing wife, who stands beside me and lifts me up every day for the last 25 years.
I also want to honor some of women who have led the fight for social, racial and economic justice in our city: my mighty sisters at the Chicago Teachers Union and, especially, my friend and mentor former CTU President Karen Lewis. She took a chance on a young teacher and helped shape the organizer I am today. I would not be your county commissioner if not for the progressive movement Karen helped build.
I also want to lift up the heroines in our county, who are committed to ensuring that equity and justice guide our work: my friend County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, fellow west sider Carolyn G. Johnson, creator of the 1865 Festival’s Juneteenth celebration; proud Maywood resident and CNN Hero Debra Vines; and the legendary 101-year old advocate, my Austin neighbor, Lillian Drummond.
All these women stand on the shoulders of Chicago greats like Jane Addams, Ida B. Wells and Rev. Addie Wyatt — women who led the fights for racial, social and economic justice in their day. We owe a debt of gratitude to these and all the unsung heroines throughout history who have fought to make our world a more just, loving and peaceful place.
To all the women of the 1st District, who have joined us in our righteous work, thank you for your service and support.
In Solidarity,
