Emerging Developments

St. Albert Commercial Intensification Projects

Commercial intensification occurs when an existing shopping centre or commercial property is redeveloped, expanded, or repurposed to meet changing market demand.

For businesses, these opportunities can offer the best of both worlds: new or improved space in a mature location with established traffic, visitation patterns, neighbouring businesses and customer awareness. Build-to-suit options can also allow space to be designed around a business’s specific needs. Explore these unique opportunities below.

388 St. Albert Trail — Build-to-Suit

A build-to-suit opportunity of up to approximately 7,000 sq. ft. along the established St. Albert Trail corridor, offering strong visibility, parking and customizable space. See Listing.

18 Inglewood Drive — Future Development

A future additional commercial building on a site anchored by Value Village, combining new space with an established retail destination and mature surrounding neighbourhoods. See Listing.

Riverside Landing — Build-to-Suit

Up to approximately 8,500 sq. ft. of build-to-suit space within an existing commercial centre, positioned to serve continued residential growth in west St. Albert. See Listing.

Village Landing — Former Theatre Space

Approximately 19,000 sq. ft. of former lower-level theatre space has been cleared for redevelopment, creating a unique large-format opportunity within an established shopping centre. See Listing.

Career Ready - Wage Subsidy

As part of the Government of Canada’s Student Work Placement Program (SWPP), TECHNATION’s wage subsidy program, Career Ready supports businesses by financing their decision to hire a student for a work-term placement. This in turn creates a rewarding opportunity for the student to apply their learning in real-world settings and puts them on a path to a bright career. Students must be registered in an accredited Canadian post-secondary institution and must work in a role that is tech immersive.

  • Fall 2026 Program (September 1 – December 31) – NOW OPEN

Applications from registered Canadian businesses and non-profits that can provide students with meaningful, tech-focused work placement opportunities are accepted.

Visit the employer resources page of Technation Canada to learn more about eligibility and how to apply.

Spotlight on... IDEA Lab Kids St. Albert

IDEA Lab Kids St. Albert opened in July 2024 as the first IDEA Lab Kids location in Western Canada, bringing hands on STEAM learning to local families through science, technology, engineering, art, math, coding and culinary programming. For owner Ryan Baker, choosing St. Albert was intentional.

“As a St. Albert resident and parent, I saw an opportunity to bring something different to the community. Families here place a strong value on education, enrichment and community involvement.”

Since opening, IDEA Lab has continued to grow. Summer 2026 was its busiest yet, with camp capacity increasing by more than 40% over 2025 and registrations growing by more than 17%. The team delivered 36 unique summer camps, welcomed more than 200 registrations, and grew to 17 employees, including local high school and post-secondary students.

Birthday parties also recorded double-digit year-over-year growth, while repeat participation has become one of the strongest indicators of success.

“We are seeing families return for a second year of camps, children attending multiple programs, and families coming back to celebrate another birthday with us. That repeat engagement tells us we are building lasting relationships with St. Albert families.”

IDEA Lab is now focused on expanding its year-round programming. Its Afterschool STEAM Academy combines after-school care with structured STEAM classes, homework support and hands-on projects, with pickup available from select St. Albert schools.

The business is also growing its school partnerships through in-school programming, residencies, community events and fundraising. Through its Camp Giveback initiative, IDEA Lab has already contributed more than $1,000 to participating local schools and parent associations.

The next major step is the planned launch of a fully licensed STEAM Preschool in January 2027. Developed with local partners Woven Blessings Occupational Therapy and the Speech Language Literacy Centre, the program will combine STEAM learning with expertise in early childhood development, communication and learning.

IDEA Lab Kids St. Albert also continues to offer PD Day and school break camps, birthday parties, mobile experiences and other enrichment programming throughout the year.

Spotlight on Business is a monthly feature that highlights local businesses, offering insight into what they offer and how they contribute to the identity and economy of St. Albert. If you own a business in St. Albert or know one that should be featured, please contact economicdevelopment@stalbert.ca with a brief description.
