Thank you for reading the SPCA of Hancock County's monthly email newsletter. We have some exciting news to share with you this month!

Welcome our new Exectutive Director,
Nichola Redmond!
|
|
Hello, fellow animal advocates and SPCA HC supporters! I am thrilled to have the opportunity to fulfill a life-long dream of doing what I love in my favorite area of the country. Maine has always been a home for me, regardless of where I was living. I am honored to be working with the wonderful staff and volunteers at the shelter. Their commitment to animals and this organization is inspiring. We will be working on building, improving, and expanding programs on the solid foundation already established.
I hope to have the opportunity to meet many of you as well as we work together for the animals and residents of Hancock County. I would be happy to hear from you if you have questions or concerns. Make an appointment to meet with me at the shelter or send an email
spcahc.ed@gmail.com.
Thank you for what you do for the animals―they need your help!

Cooper
Ninja skills are off the charts for this sleek black cat. Shelter visitors sometimes can’t find him in plain sight! He’s just that good. Cooper’s a bit overwhelmed at the shelter but would enjoy a quiet home with gentle humans. We think he might even turn off his ninja skills sometimes once he settles in.

Iris and Felicity
These 3.5 year old sisters are a bonded pair. When they were kittens, they both had serious eye infections. While Iris's eyes recovered quickly, Felicity was left with permanent scar tissue. Her vision is somewhat affected, but it doesn't hurt and she is a cheerful and loving kitty just like her sister.

Gus
Gus is still looking for a home! Please help us get the word out about this active young shepherd mix. He's smart, he's playful, and he needs a home with someone who will give him consistency and love, and a bit of patience.

Honeyblaze
2 year old Boxer mix. Honeyblaze is a special needs dog. She is easily frightened and has seizures sometimes when she is stressed. Honey is looking for a quiet home where she has a calmer doggie friend. When she's relaxed, Honey is a couch snuggler. She's currently in foster. Call us to set up a meeting in her foster home!
|
|
Edith
Itty bitty Edith only weighs about 6 pounds. This diminutive darling loves to bask in the windowsill so much, we’re pretty sure she’s solar-powered. Gentle with other cats and slightly shy when meeting new people, Edith is a bud waiting for a home to blossom in!

Ruger-Roo
As you can see, Ruger-Roo loves his bowl. He'll carry other toys around too, and playing fetch is another favorite thing. This handsome, goofy dog isn't so much into the mushy-gushy snuggle stuff... not till he's tired and thinks you won't make a big deal of it, anyway.
Ruger-Roo is compatible to be adopted with Honeyblaze, listed above.
|
|
Shy
Where did Shy get her name? We're not sure, because this outgoing, curious cat is anything but! She has an endearing personality and it doesn't take much to get that purr motor started. We think she's 1-2 years old.

March Wishlist Items
Looking for a way to help the shelter? These are items we particularly need this month.
|
|
Paw-Safe Ice Melt.
Spring is nearly upon us, but it's not quite here yet. We still have ice on the sidewalks outside the shelter, and we need a few more containers of pet-safe ice melt to ensure the safety of shelter staff, visitors, and dogs. Standard ice melters are not safe for dog paws, but there are several brands that are pet-safe.
EasyWalk or Sensible/Sensation Harnesses: Medium, Large, and X-Large.
We are still in need of a few new harnesses. We walk the shelter dogs in these front-clip harnesses, which are comfortable, safe, and encourage good leash manners. Most of the dogs who come through our doors are medium-large dogs, and our harnesses in these sizes are getting worn out.
Regular (not splashless!) Bleach.
Bleach is a necessary disinfectant. (We can't use the splashless kind because it does not disinfect the samy way regular bleach does.) We use regular bleach in a diluted solution to sanitize the animals' dishes after washing. We always need a supply on hand so that we can keep the germs down and the critters healthy.

Prevent A Litter (PAL) Program: Helping low income community members spay and neuter their companion animals.
|
The phone is ringing at the front desk. Who’s calling? It’s a community member who has fallen on hard times, and they have a cat. They’re worried that she might get pregnant. They want to get her spayed - can we help?
We can! We get these calls daily here at the SPCA of Hancock County, and we have a program designed just for this situation. It’s been operating for over 10 years, and we call it the PAL (
P
revent
A
L
itter) Program. When community members call us to ask what resources are available, we do our best to give them information on available programs that can help them, including our PAL Program, Spay ME, and other area programs and clinics.
We issue PAL Certificates to people who are already receiving assistance such as TANF or SNAP/Food Stamps and who request our assistance to spay/neuter their animals. The cost of the surgery is then divided into thirds: the participating veterinarian donates one third of the cost, the pet owner pays one third, and the SPCA HC pays one third. We have 8 partnering vet clinics that accept PAL Certificates.
The availability of PAL Certificates depends in large part on funding. We’re honored to have received grant funding for cat-specific PAL Certificates for 2019 from the Elmina B. Sewall Foundation, a Maine-based organization, and this is already helping us to expand the number of certificates we can issue for cats. We recognize that it takes collaboration among organizations and individuals to address the challenge of making spay/neuter services accessible.
In 2018 we were able to assist community members in obtaining spay/neuter services for 47 cats, 17 dogs, and 3 rabbits through the PAL Program. What can we do in 2019? Stay tuned, stay involved, and we’ll find out together!
