Note from Ellen
Dear Friends,
On Sunday we will conclude our summer sermon series in conversation with MaryAnn McKibben Dana’s book Better Than Normal: Virtues for an Off-Script Life. In her final chapter, MaryAnn urges us to shift from Competition to Community. Our scripture gives us a glimpse of the early church through the lens of Acts 4:23-37.
As I’m guessing you know, I am a bit competitive, a zealously loyal fan of my favorite teams (Go Cats!). That said, our hypercompetitive landscape does not always serve us or others well. The passage from Acts paints a picture of the early church as a place where sharing and support were the norm, where true community was embodied. Most scholars agree however that this description also holds up a romanticized ideal of a lockstep community that sang “Kumbaya” on repeat. What can we learn from this text? Who is God calling us to be? What shape can and should community take now?
I hope you’ll join me on Sunday for worship when we’ll wonder about this together.
Grace and peace,
Ellen
Saying Good-bye to René: Our beloved Director of Christian Education, René Prager has accepted a new position at Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. Her final day on staff at FPC will be July 30, but her last Sunday with us is this Sunday, July 19. We will pray for René in worship and honor her with a Sips & Sweets reception following worship. Please join us in giving thanks to God for René’s ministry among us and wishing her well as she goes.
Curious Kids:In August we will continue celebrating the role of curiosity in the life of faith with a sermon series based on children’s questions about God, Jesus, faith, and/or the church. We are so thankful for the questions we have received, and excited to address them together. We are now looking for children and youth who would be willing to ask the questions we preach on from the lectern on each of the Sundays between August 2 and September 6. Your curious kid or grandkid does not have to have submitted a question, but if they will be around and want to help us lead worship, please email Pastor Ellen or Pastor Casey.

“Who is My Neighbor?”
The blues and the yellows were not friends until…(check out “Who is My Neighbor?” from the church library to find out more).
We enjoyed a live action rendition of this story, followed by a snack and activity, on Monday. The afternoon storm gifted us with extra time together – enough time to check out books and read a 2nd story!
Next Monday, July 20, we will meet at Two Scoops at 1:30 PM for a story and ice cream.

THE BRITISH ARE COMING—and we hope you are too!!!
. . . To Lunch Bunch on JULY 28th that is. . .
July’s guest speaker at Lunch Bunch will be Ed Niven and, though he is a Redcoat, he is 100% American. In fact, he is a card-carrying member of the Sons of the American Revolution. But, somebody has to be the enemy in all of those reenactments! Ed is considered to be a regional expert on King George’s Army during the Revolution. And he will bring some of his collection of artifacts and memorabilia with him. So come and hear about the life of the British soldier in the 18th century and find out how the Revolution looked from the other side as we celebrate America’s 250th birthday in Davis Hall at 11:45 on Tuesday, July 28.
Children above the age of 8 and accompanied by responsible adults are invited to take part in this special program.
We’ll have a special All-American lunch of hot dogs with mustard, ketchup, some chili and slaw, chips, watermelon and brownies for this special intergenerational event. The cost for this little” indoor cookout” will be $12/person. Everyone will need to make a reservation by noon on Thursday, July 23 by calling the Church Reservation line at 704-788-2100 option 7. Please leave your name, the number of meals needed, and a phone number where you can be reached on the recording. Please feel free to brown bag if this menu does not suit you but we still need to know you are coming but not buying lunch.
Three volunteers for easy set up and clean up would be welcome. Contact Cathy Floyd with questions.
. . . AND, just so you know whose side we are on, we are working on booking the best American patriot we can find to be with us later this year!!

June Lunch Bunch
Twenty one members and guests from our Lunch Bunch toured Davidson College last month.
Reverend Daniel Heath shared some of the college's history with us and showed us some of the oldest antebellum buildings that were largely built by slaves. Davidson College has recently installed a larger-than-life sculpture titled "With The Hands" in memory of those workers and has converted Oak Row to a small museum on campus dedicated to the contributions of members of the local black community to the college.
Afterwards, we enjoyed "lunch with a view" at the North Harbor.
The Lunch Bunch has great programs and they are open to people of all ages and to guests. If you are not attending because you think Lunch Bunch is only for retirees, you are missing out.

Vamos!
“Let’s Go Together” was the theme for our week at Passport Kids Camp. We enjoyed four days and three nights at Montreat. Each day included worship celebration, small group Bible study, and devotion time with our FPC group. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the kids were able to select from a variety of activities during “Rotations”. Making God’s eyes and playing Gaga ball were among the favorites. Each evening was a special celebration: Rec Party, Night Market, and the Variety Show. A huge thank you to Dave Rogers who served as a chaperone – paddleboarding and canoeing in the pouring rain, serving as emcee for the FPC Lorax act in the Variety Show, and late nights and early mornings!
It was a wonderful week to grow in our faith, form deeper connections with one another, make new friends, and be refreshed in the beauty of Montreat. Passport is open to children and youth who have completed 3rd-6th grades. July 5-8, 2027 are the Montreat dates for next summer. Registration opens in September.
