CAL FIRE Releases Updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone Maps

CAL FIRE has released updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone (FHSZ) maps to help communities better understand their wildfire risk. These maps, updated for the first time since 2007, reflect the latest science, incorporating improved fire behavior modeling and local climate data to more accurately identify areas at risk.

The revised maps illustrate the potential hazard level of a given area by evaluating the likelihood of wildfire reaching it and the possible intensity of a fire. While they do not assess the risk to individual properties, they provide valuable insight at a broader community and regional scale.

What do the maps show?

They categorize areas into three risk levels that are most susceptible to wildfire:

  • Moderate Fire Hazard
  • High Fire Hazard
  • Very High Fire Hazard

Why does this matter?

The updated fire zone maps are essential for:

  • Identifying fire safety risks in our community
  • Determining building and safety requirements for new and existing homes
  • Guiding local construction and property maintenance / defensible standards
