Legal experts warn Meta’s new terms still grant broad scraping permissions, despite language changes

Meta has removed the word “train” from its upcoming terms of service for business accounts. The company revised its terms after Nieman Lab’s story exposed that the new terms would permit broad scraping of websites “associated with” business accounts, and possibly allow Meta to use that scraped content to train its AI models.

But the revised terms will still allow for broad scraping of websites, potentially superseding robots.txt files, according to legal experts.

A new report argues newsrooms need to do more experiments — like, the kind with randomization and results

Mississippi Today had a question. Did the stories around its Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporting affect the way those investigations were received?

It’s the kind of question local newsrooms can’t easily test on their own. But researchers from Local NExT Lab at Syracuse University could.

In a national survey, 1,768 adults were shown the same investigation surrounded by a different mix of stories. In one, the investigation was shown alongside positive community stories. (Think: “How a local fossil park changed science history.”) In another, the investigation was featured alongside other investigative stories.

The investigation was rated more accurate, important, and relevant when it was surrounded by community-focused stories, not other investigative stories. (Audience reaction to a third story mix, where the investigation was surrounded by stories about legislation, was not consistent.)

The many barriers young adults must overcome to vote: A research-based reporting guide

Nearly 50 million adults aged 18 to 29 will be eligible to vote in the 2026 midterm elections, making Generation Z potentially one of the nation’s most powerful and influential voting blocs.

The reality is that many Americans in this age group do not vote, a problem that researchers have studied for decades. Meanwhile, a number of new laws and policy proposals across the U.S. may make it even harder for young people to register to vote and cast their ballots on time.

We created this guide to encourage journalists to examine independent, nonpartisan research about youth voting patterns and obstacles and to use that knowledge to ground their coverage of the 2026 midterm elections.
