Week 5 - National Golden Retriever Day...
Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular breeds of dogs, which is why people all over the world choose to bring Goldens into their homes as four-legged family members. But these dogs can do more than just make great pets!
Recognized by the American Kennel Club in the United States, the Golden Retriever is also a popular choice as a disability assistance dog, including the important task of working as guide dogs for the blind and hearing dogs for the deaf.
In addition, Golden Retrievers are trained to be hunting dogs, detection dogs, and search-and-rescue participants. The breed’s friendly, gentle temperament means it is unsuited to being a professional guard dog, but its loveable quality has also made it the third-most popular family dog breed in the United States.
How many Golden Retrievers gathered in one place does it take to set a world record? Well, at least a few hundred! These records, although unofficial, were set in just the past few years by proud Golden Retriever owners worldwide:
- Back in July of 2018, 361 of the pups gathered in Tomich, Scotland to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the breed. People traveled all over the world to attend the event that took place at the Guisachan Estate, which is the original place where Tweedmouth bred the first Golden.
-
However, in October of that same year, the record was almost doubled when 681 Goldens gathered with their owners at Goldie-Palooza in Huntington Beach, California. Activities included a kissing booth (Smooch the Pooch), a costume contest, and a collection of raffles and vendors supporting their favorite breed.
- The record was completely busted when more than 1000 dogs and owners gathered in Golden, Colorado on February 3, 2019, in honor of National Golden Retriever Day. As a special treat, “pupaccinos” (doggie cappuccinos) were available, and the group took a walk through town–which is extremely friendly to dogs, no matter what their breed!
We here at Brookhurst Hobbies have a special connection to Golden Retrievers via our favorite four-legged staff member "Hans" whose photo is shown just below. Hans is actually a Lab, but some of his best friends are Goldens.
Now that we have had some rain here in Southern California the immediate fire danger has lessened. But obviously now the clean up and rebuilding efforts are just getting underway, so we are going to leave the link here to some local charities in case anyone is still looking for ways to help with the recovery. A few weeks ago we provided a blog post with some national and local organizations working here in Southern California. You can find that post HERE. Or there are many other lists going around social media where you can find specific organizations doing good work to help so many people who have lost everything.
This week is a broad spectrum of arrivals. Vintage re-releases from Eduard going back to WWI. Italeri Battle Sets commemorating Bastogne. And a massive amount of Gundam kits. New Card based games, new TCG stocks and a lot of new items in all departments heading our way soon!
A New "What are you Building?" and a bunch of new events on the calendar too!
So let's dive right into what's new in the store.

D&D 50th Anniversary Play Series – Monster Manual (2025)
Pre-Release Event (THIS WEEK!)
Wednesday, February 5th
6:00pm
Release Event
Wednesday, February 19th
6:00pm
The Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game is about storytelling in worlds of sword and sorcery. It shares elements with childhood games of make-believe. Like those games, D&D is driven by imagination. It’s about picturing the towering castle beneath the stormy night sky and imagining how a fantasy adventurer might react to the challenges that scene presents.
Unlike a game of make-believe, D&D gives structure to the stories, a way of determining the consequences of the adventurers’ action. Players roll dice to resolve whether their attacks hit or miss or whether their adventurers can scale a cliff, roll away from the strike of a magical lightning bolt, or pull off some other dangerous task. Anything is possible, but the dice make some outcomes more probable than others.
In the Dungeons & Dragons game, each player creates an adventurer (also called a character) and teams up with other adventurers (played by friends). Working together, the group might explore a dark dungeon, a ruined city, a haunted castle, a lost temple deep in a jungle, or a lava-filled cavern beneath a mysterious mountain. The adventurers can solve puzzles, talk with other characters, battle fantastic monsters, and discover fabulous magic items and other treasure.

Airco DH.2
We received a large restock of Eduard kits this past week. A number of popular aircraft arrived in multiple variants, P-51 Mustangs, Bf-109's and Wildcats. But we decided that this re-boxed 2005-2015 kit, a well regarded version of a famous WWI British fighter, was the best to bring to attention here for a closer look.
The Model

The Aircraft
The single-seat Airco DH2 was designed as a result of lessons learned in early aerial combat. This was Geoffrey de Havilland's 2nd pusher design for the Aircraft Manufacturing Company (Airco) and probably one of the most significant.
It was derived from the Airco DH1 two-seater and retained the biplane pusher layout. This afforded the pilot the maximum possible field of view from the forward-most tub. Significantly smaller and lighter than its predecessor, the Airco DH2 emphasised manoeuvrability as a primary design aim and it was soon adopted into Royal Flying Corps (RFC) service.
The type was unusual in adopting a fixed forward-firing .303 Lewis machine gun fitted in the nose of the aircraft which made it a significant leap forward in dog-fighting capability. The gun could be positioned in mid-air on either of the 3 flexible mounts although most pilots chose the forward-facing central position and opted for aiming the aircraft at the enemy rather than the gun.
The prototype (4372) was first flown in July 1915 and entered RFC service in February 1916 and the vast majority of the production aircraft were fitted with a Gnôme Monosoupape 100 hp rotary engine.
During WW1 the Airco DH2 was flown by a number of notable pilots including Major Lance Hawker VC, who claimed 7 victories as Commander of No 24 Squadron RFC (Hawker was later shot down by ‘Red Baron’ Manfred von Richthofen). Additionally, Squadron Leader Lionel Rees won the Victoria Cross in an Airco DH2 for single handedly attacking a formation of 10 German aircraft on 1st July 1916.
The type saw major service on the Western Front and was heavily engaged during the Battle of the Somme with No.24 Squadron RFC, who destroyed 44 enemy machines during the conflict.
Despite being very manoeuvrable and easy to fly, a number of accident occurred during pilot training although this was attributed to the poor standard or airmen rather than any deficiencies in the aircraft.
In total some 453 Airco DH2’s were built, all by Airco at their works in Hendon, although it was very quickly outclassed by the new German tractor biplane such as the Halberstad D.II and Albatross D.I, which appeared in the skies over France in 1916.
The introduction of reliable interrupter gear allowing firing through the propeller disc resulted in the DH2 and similar types being superseded in the RFC by British tractor biplanes such as the Sopwith Camel and RAF SE5A and in 1917 No.24 Squadron had their Airco DH2’s replaced with Airco DH5’s.
A few aircraft remained active as trainers into 1918, but by the Armistice on 11th November there were no DH2's left in service with what by then had become the RAF.

Bastogne Siege - 80 Years
We also received a shipment of Italeri kits this past week. This full battle set designed to recreate and commemorate the December 1944 siege of Bastogne where the 101st US Airborne fought the advancing Germans and the harsh elements to hold onto a vital crossroads in Belgium.
The Model
The Battle Set kit contains 36 US Troops and 36 German Troops, as well as two tanks, a ruined house and numerous accessories and signs.
The Vehicle
On December 16, 1944, the German army launched a major offensive through the dense Ardennes forest in Belgium, codenamed “Wacht am Rhein.” The city of Bastogne, a crucial road junction and significant logistical center, was one of the primary objectives of the strategic plan. The Belgian town and its surrounding areas were encircled by German forces, effectively isolating a large number of American troops within the pocket. These troops withstood numerous enemy assaults for several days under adverse weather and environmental conditions. The resistance of the 101st Airborne Division “Screaming Eagles” was legendary. On December 26, the siege was lifted by a counteroffensive from several armored divisions of the U.S. Third Army, under the command of General George Smith Patton.

About Vehicle
The DMC DeLorean is a rear-engine two-passenger sports car manufactured and marketed by John DeLorean's DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) for the American market from 1981 until 1983—ultimately the only car brought to market by the fledgling company. The DeLorean is sometimes referred to by its internal DMC pre-production designation, DMC-12. However, the DMC-12 name was never used in sales or marketing materials for the production model.
Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the DeLorean is noted for its gull-wing doors and brushed stainless-steel outer body panels, as well as its lack of power and performance incongruous with its looks and price. Though its production was short-lived, the DeLorean became widely known after it was featured as the time machine in the Back to the Future films.
With the first production car completed on January 21, 1981, the design incorporated numerous minor revisions to the hood, wheels and interior before production ended in late December 1982, shortly after DMC filed for bankruptcy and after total production reached an estimated 9,000 units.
Despite the car having a reputation for poor build quality and an unsatisfactory driving experience, the DeLorean continues to have a strong following driven in part by the popularity of the science fiction film franchise Back to the Future. 6,500 DeLoreans were estimated to still be on the road as of 2015.

What Are You Building?
For our first "What Are You Building" of the new year, we have a great set of photos and a YouTube link from our friend "Scalemo" of his latest build.
The 1/12th scale Honda Monkey motorcycle from Tamiya.
Here's how he describes the model and the process of building it.
Can you tell us a little bit about this kit that you built?
The kit is a Honda Monkey 125 in 1:12 scale from Tamiya. I built this kit to get familiar with motorbikes because I have others in my stash that I plan to build later. This motorcycle model is got great engineering into it. The parts fit really nice and have great detail. The instructions were very helpful as the paint process was done to most parts prior to the assembly. I choose to paint it in reference to the White-Red 2025 Honda Monkey 125, a retro style Honda used from their Model Z100 released in the 1960s.
How was it painted and did you add anything to the kit?
The kit was mostly painted with Tamiya acrylics airbrushed. For the tank I used Tamiya White Lacquer Paint (LP-2) and applied gloss coat afterwards. The front suspension fork was painted in Alclad Black Base first, then Alclad Chrome, after this I sprayed a light coat of Tamiya Clear Red (X-27) to give a metallic red sheen to the shocks. I did not use the hose for lines included because it was too stiff to run around, I used a thinner line I got from striping a usb cable. The chrome parts were used as they came in the box and used gloves to handle them because they can get scratched easily. I also want to share how nice the decals are, they give a realistic touch to the model.

MetalGreymon (Vaccine)
A huge shipment of new and restock Bandai arrived in the middle of the week! I'll drop a couple photos below to give you a sense of just how much. If there's a particular kit you've been looking for, now is a great time to see just what's arrived!
The Model
Metal Greymon (Vaccine) from "Digimon Adventure" is now part of the "Figure-rise Amplified" model-kit series from Bandai!
The contrast between its body and machine parts are highlighted thanks to the intricate modeling of the Amplified series; the chest hatch can be opened to launch the Giga Destroyer organic missile. The massive wings mounted to its back use PET sheets with a vivid pattern printed on them; its tail is made to be flexible with internal lead wires. Parts and a display base to show it off in its Alteraus mode are included too, and 3D metallic stickers are also included for extra flashiness! It's also equipped with connection holes in various places for customization and expansion.
[Includes]:
Armed parts
Display base
Joint parts
Stickers
3D metallic stickers
PET sheet
Lead wire (x2 types)
The Character
MetalGreymon (Vaccine) is a Cyborg Digimon. It has mechanized more than half of its body, incorporating technology appropriated from Andromon. The MetalGreymon of Folder Continent are Cyborg Digimon that succeed in perfectly digivolving from Greymon, and draw out a stronger power which cannot be compared with those of File Island. In order to digivolve to MetalGreymon, it must fight its way through and defeat the formidable opponents who come against it. Also, MetalGreymon's offensive power is said to equal that of a single nuclear warhead, and if the likes of a low-level Digimon suffered that blow, it would be annihilated without leaving a trace. Its "Trident Arm" is made from enhanced Chrome Digizoid.

The Gundam Card Game
Details Announced
Pre-orders and Beta Event Information Coming Soon!
| |
|
The Gundam Card Game is now slated for a July 11th release. There will be four starter decks released simultaneously. We will provide a peek at each one below. There will also be releases of card cases, card sleeves and dice. We will cover all of those and more in greater detail as we continue to receive updates.
The Latest Updates on 1-27-25:
We have learned that Bandai will release Gundam Card Game: Gundam Assemble Starter Set, a new hybrid miniatures and TCG product, also on July 11, 2025.
Bandai was clearly thinking out-of-the-box with this new starter deck configuration, as it is crossover product between two recently announced product lines that reside in two different genres of the tabletop games space.
The Gundam Assemble Starter Sets offer players the contents of a starter deck plus Gunpla miniatures for the Gundam Assemble tabletop miniatures game. The Gundam Assemble miniatures can be placed on token cards while playing the Gundam Card Game to further enhance the play experience.
There will be four different starter decks available for Gundam Card Game (in this configuration and in a standard starter configuration): Heroic Beginnings (Blue/White deck), Wings of Advance (Green/Blue deck), Zeon's Rush (Red/Green deck), and SEED Strike (White/Red deck). The contents of a standard starter include a ready-to-play 50-card deck, 10 Resource cards, 8 Token cards, a paper Damage counter, a rule/playsheet, and a one-card Bonus Pack.
The Gundam Assemble Starter Sets will also include three unpainted Gunpla miniatures.
For the Beta Event on February 22nd, it can only be registered for via the Bandai TCG Website, not here in the store. As of today, all slots are allocated by Bandai, and the registration is closed on their site.
If we have any additional updates we will add them as soon as they come available.

Kinfire Delve - Callous' Lab
For 1-2 Players, Ages 14 and up.
A tactical and cooperative card game for 1-2 players, in Kinfire Delve: Callous' Lab you will fight your way through the Well deck of challenge cards to reach Callous, the Master of the Well, and face them in an epic final battle.
Callous' Well is made up of four challenge cards, with Callous himself in the middle. As a challenge is defeated, another takes its place, with 52 challenge cards in total. As you face the challenges of the Well, you may only play a skill card from your hand that matches the color of the challenge card. That is, if you’re facing a red challenge card, then you may only play a red skill card. Some cards will have two colors, and some cards are white, or wild. If the card you play does not defeat the challenge, you'll be able to add some progress to it, and attempt it again, though you may suffer a penalty for doing so. Other Seekers can provide help by playing one of their own cards as a boost, but beware. Running out of cards nets you an Exhaustion before you can draw a new hand. Exhaustion cards are never good, but some are worse than others.
Defeating a challenge will provide you a reward, such as regaining health or delving deeper into the Well, which is represented by discarding unseen challenge cards. Once you've made your way to the bottom of the Well, you'll face Callous himself. All Seekers share a health pool, and if the pool reaches zero, you're defeated. This is a game that requires teamwork.

Real to Replica No. 9 - Vought A-7 Corsair
The Real to Replica book series presents, as the title suggests, a publication that has both historic references, aircraft details, colour artwork and modelling projects on a particular aviation subject. Titles will include subjects from World War I through to present day and written by renown authors.
Design and development of the modern American A-7 Corsair fighter-bomber in its various versions, including the international variants. There is also a detailed photo tour and colour aircraft profiles. The last 30 pages or so present models in various scales.
