2023 Individual Artist Fellow Applications Open

The Fiscal Year 2023 Artist Fellowship application is now open in smARTDE. The deadline for applications is August 1, 2022. Check the website for guidelines and more information.

A new artistic discipline is offered this year: Visual Arts: Interdisciplinary for work which combines two or more of the Fellowship arts disciplines (Media Arts, Crafts, Painting, Photography, Sculpture, Works on Paper). Masters applications will be accepted in Visual Arts and Folk Arts from artists who have received an Established Fellowship prior to January 2016 in the same discipline.

Looking ahead, the Division is preparing to make changes to the Fellowship program for Fiscal Year 2024. We anticipate offering Fellowships on a rotating cycle of artistic disciplines similar to the Masters Fellowship schedule. This will reduce administrative costs for the jurying process and allow the Division to award more Fellowships per artistic discipline. For applicants, this means that there will be years when your artistic discipline will not be offered.

Gregory K. Hammond wanted to be a writer “from the get-go.” In elementary school, he "...wrote book reports in the form of plays and presented them for the oral reports.” Later, inspired by the Civil Rights movement and its emerging Black writers and poets, he began to read and write poetry as well as write novels.

Jim Hawkins

Emerging, Literature: Playwriting

A decade ago, Jim Hawkins decided to become a playwright after a 25-year career as a Methodist minister. Though he was a published nonfiction writer and had written skits as part of his ministry, his theatre experience “was limited to being in the audience or the pit orchestra.” Hawkins then challenged himself to write a full-length play.
