Our work remained centered on long-standing reliability issues such as bore scoring, IMS failures, lubrication sensitivity, and component longevity, with an emphasis on process-driven remanufacturing rather than one-off rebuilds. | | Over the past year, we continued advancing cylinder remediation technologies, including PTWA and SUMEbore coatings, expanding their application and refining their use based on engine purpose and operating environment. These processes, alongside Nickies and other proven solutions, allow for more tailored approaches to thermal control, wear resistance, and long-term durability across multiple Porsche platforms. Bore scoring diagnostics and preventive inspection tools also remained a key focus as owners increasingly look to catch issues earlier. | | A major effort throughout 2025 was bringing more critical machining and inspection processes in-house. Expanding capabilities such as cylinder and block honing, surface grinding, magnetic particle inspection, crankshaft polishing, and line boring allows for tighter control over tolerances, surface finishes, and quality checks at every stage of an engine build. Reducing reliance on outside vendors isn’t about speed—it’s about consistency, accountability, and controlling variables that directly affect engine reliability. | | The post-COVID supply chain has further reinforced the importance of this approach. Inconsistent parts quality—even among new and OEM components—has made additional inspection and validation steps a necessity rather than an exception. In response, we expanded incoming-part testing, added redundancy within the supply chain where possible, and adjusted processes to assume variability rather than ideal conditions. Ongoing consolidation and increased venture capital involvement across the automotive industry have only underscored the need for independent verification and disciplined quality control. | | As interest in Porsche engine rebuilding continues to grow, so has the number of companies entering the space. While that expansion brings enthusiasm and fresh perspectives, long-term reliability work depends on more than short-term results. Many of the failure modes we address today—material compatibility, lubrication behavior, bore wear, and repeat issues across rebuild cycles—only become fully understood after years of teardown data, pattern analysis, and real-world mileage. Our approach is shaped by that long view: focusing not just on what works initially, but on what continues to work tens of thousands of miles later. | | Developments at Flat 6 Innovations also continue to play an important role beyond our own builds. Lessons learned through high-performance and endurance-focused engine programs—both water-cooled and air-cooled—inform the parts, processes, and installation standards shared with our network of certified installers. This ensures that Porsche owners have access to proven solutions through trusted partners worldwide, expanding their options for rebuilding, upgrading, and maintaining their engines while maintaining consistent technical standards. | | Collaboration with Flat 6 Innovations further strengthened turnkey engine programs and the global IMS Solution installer network, helping ensure consistent support for customers regardless of location. Education remained a priority as well. In 2025, The Knowledge Gruppe hosted hands-on professional engine rebuild classes and technical webinars covering topics such as pre-purchase inspections, bore scoring, and IMS bearing failures—continuing a long-standing effort to share accurate, experience-based information with both professionals and owners. | | Looking ahead to 2026, we’re building on this foundation with further refinement of bore coating technologies, continued expansion of machining and prototyping capabilities, the next generation of FSI water-cooled engine programs, and additional hands-on and online educational offerings. You’ll also see a renewed focus on technical articles and video content—back at the workbench, where this all started. | | |
Thank you for continuing to trust LN Engineering with your engines and your questions. We look forward to sharing more as the year unfolds.
Stay technical!
