MNC hosted an incredible Welcome and Farewell Reception Consul General Ana Luisa Vallejo and Consul Vicente Sanchez who is retiring. More than 100 friends and community leaders celebrated at Liliana’s Hall. MNC’s team did an excellent job with perfect set up and the catered food was a one-of-a-kind cocktail appetizer table set up by Mario Quintanilla, Joana Mattero and Giselle Monge. It was a full house of good food, lively conversation and even livelier music by Mariachi San Francisco.

Supervisors Hillary Ronen and Myrna Melgar offered words of welcome to the new consul general and farewell wishes to Vicente Sanchez. MNC Board President Jim Quadra CEO Richard Ybarra welcomed everyone and bade farewell to Vicente for his friendship and body of work. Among the dozens of special guests were the Consuls from Canade, Peru and Spain.

We were honored to have Anne Cervantes as our Distinguished Speaker for August. Anne is a California Native Latina with deep roots in the local San Francisco community with knowledge about the history of MNC and the Mission District. During the lunch discussion Anne talked about a variety of topics from history being lost as San Francisco was rebuilding itself to the racist undertones that newspapers used to discredit Latinos and whitewash the history they were present for. She mentioned how North Beach used to be a big Spanish merchant town and shared information about places such as the Latin Quarters and Mexican Plaza. She shared news snippets of MNC, the Latina founder of San Francisco Juana Briones and an even deeper history on our founding sisters Rachel and Eva Wolfsohn who built the Mission District Girls Club that grew to focus on youth and mothers and soon would embrace all people and present them with opportunities for growth.

Anne is extremely knowledge about the Mission district and had so much to share. The last thing we saw was a video of the La Raze Silkscreen Process and how they created their own posters and newspapers to feature Latino community news and announcements since it was never featured in other newspapers. We presented Anne with the Distinguished Speakers mug and a round of applause. Thank you, Anne, for sharing your knowledge with us and continuing to keep history alive.

MNC’s Mission Bay Campus celebrated its open house, showcasing the conversion from a preschool to a toddler class. Staff, parents, and children gathered over food and drinks to hear Campus supervisor Sarina Escalante offer words of welcome and how excited she and the staff are about the new changes. Master teacher Vivian Lopez also shared her thoughts and thanked everyone. CEO Richard Ybarra, Deputy CEO Beiling Gonzalez Early Education Director Barbara Walden and shared warm words, everyone toured the campus and admired the new furniture and play areas. Thank you to LIFF’s Liz Winograd, Norma Ruiz and Sean Doocy for joining and for sponsoring the indoor and outdoor furniture! Thank you, Sarina Escalante, Vivian Lopez, Adriana Lepe, Silvia Najera, and Blanca Velasquez, for hosting this lively Open House!

We are also excited to congratulate Vivian Lopez on her promotion to Campus Supervisor for MNC Mission Bay Campus. She has worked for MNC for the last six years and it has been her pleasure to serve our Mission, Bayview, and Excelsior community. As she embarks on this new journey, her goal is to continue to serve as a bridge to hope and uplifting opportunities for all our families.

MNC’s Stevenson Campus is renovated and ready for toddlers! This small, adorable campus can hold up to 20 little ones and is full of toys, books and cute wall decals that will greet parents and toddlers at Stevenson Campus. There were mini sandwiches and drinks for attendees to enjoy at the open house and Deputy CEO Beiling Gonzalez, Early Education Director of Family and Community Services Mariana Romero and Early Education Director Barbara Walden also shared excitement with the brand-new conversions and congratulated everyone on their hard work.

Master Teacher Rosario Macha gave a warm welcome and a tour. She showed the new play areas, the toys and even the mini library wall. On the wall were frames, and she wants the kids to eventually put up their pictures and include their family trees. We can’t wait to see the walls fill up with drawings, pictures and more.
