SUPPORT
Expanding Sustainable Farming
| | As a nonprofit farm whose mission is to connect people to the land and each other, we are always looking for ways to help create a more resilient local food system. Updating our farm equipment is expensive, and over the past 18 months, Land's Sake has been fortunate to have been awarded several state grants which support our goal of expanding our sustainable farming practices. Thank you to all of the generous individual donors who have helped the farm raise our required match portion for each state grant. | | |
With this grant funding, Land's Sake has purchased:
-
a no-till drill, which minimizes soil disturbance when planting, allowing more microorganisms to survive in the soil
-
a row mulcher, which applies mulch and compost with precision and efficiency, decreasing our waste and costs by only placing these where it is needed most
-
a solar-powered traveling water reel, which moves automatically to irrigate crops without hands-on time from farm crews.
This month, grant support also helped fund a new farm-scale aerated static pile compost system, enabling Land's Sake to meet its own compost needs and eventually accept food scraps, manure, and landscaping waste from the community.

FARM
Transplanting in Progress!
| | | | Land's Sake farmers Solomon and Wes spent time this week transplanting eggplant seedlings from the greenhouse to the fields. Heat-loving eggplants prefer to begin growing on heat mats that simulate a warmer climate (think Mediterranean fields!) until the ground warms in late Spring. | | |
EDUCATION
Thank you, Spring Interns!
| | | | This spring, Land's Sake was fortunate to have some fantastic high school interns from Weston High School and Acton-Boxborough Regional High School. Interns helped to maintain the education garden, care for animals, shadow education programs, lend a hand with building projects, and assist farmers in the veggie and flower fields. Maybe the most unique (and fun!) task was training the goats to walk on leads! This will be a vital skill for the goats to spot-graze safely around the farm. | | With support from the Town of Weston and the Weston Conservation Commission. |
