NATIONAL CHEESE TOAST DAY
On September 15, National Cheese Toast Day savors the cheesy goodness of this classic dish.
Simple but delicious, cheese and toast go well together. A little butter helps everything meld together nicely, too. The crustier the bread, the better. It makes an excellent side dish, but cheese toast also serves up a satisfying snack.
While food holidays aren't in short order on the calendar, we can't surpass them because of the carb count. Cheese and toast perfectly combine to dunk into soup. In the middle of dinner conversation, a chunk of cheese toast waved in the air emphatically punctuates your story, especially when finishing a monologue with a satisfying bite.
It might surprise many to know the treat was created by Del Johnson. In 1958, he opened his first Sizzler restaurant. It was an instant success. And although the recipe changed a bit over the years, the concept of Cheese Toast hasn't.
Over 60 years later, Cheese Toast continues to be a favorite dish across the country. With the best cheeses and bread, served up as an appetizer, with soup or with the main course, cheese toast pairs well with many dishes.

NATIONAL DOUBLE CHEESEBURGER DAY
As one of America's favorites, National Double Cheeseburger Day on September 15 recognizes a food icon savored across the U.S. We are bringing you double the taste on this delicious food holiday.
A double cheeseburger is more than seasoned ground beef, grilled and placed between two slices of bread or a bun. It's double the patties, topped with cheese, sauteed onions, peppers, pickles, and sliced onions,. Once you add condiments such as ketchup, mustard, or mayo you create a modern American version a hamburger. We get hungry just thinking about it!
While the day is about the double cheeseburger, that doesn't mean you can't add your favorite toppings. When it comes to adding some tanginess to a burger, a few ingredients never fail. Goat cheese brightens a burger every time. But if you're looking for a crispness, too, add some creamy coleslaw instead. Another option in this category is the reliable tartar sauce.
If you like to bring the heat, you can look to your cheeses. Pepper jack is a mild way of adding some spice. However, if you prefer to test the limits, fresh sliced jalapenos or habaneros will also do the trick.
It is most likely that the hamburger sandwich first appeared in the 19th or early 20th centuries, but there is much controversy over its origin. Over the years, the hamburger has become a culinary icon in the United States.
And Americans love their burgers! Restaurants dedicated to making them just right have been in business for generations. Even those who refrain from red meat don’t hesitate to find a way to enjoy a juicy burger. Whether the burger is charbroiled, grilled or barely kisses the heat, there’s a flavor for you.
So when something this delicious exists, double it! Then celebrate it!

deliquesce
/dɛlɪˈkwɛs/
Definition: To become liquid, typically through the absorption of moisture from the air, or to dissolve gradually.
Origin: Late Latin deliquescere, from Latin de- (down) + liquescere (to become liquid).
Example: The salt began to deliquesce, forming a puddle of brine on the countertop.
The term "deliquesce" can be understood as "melt away," referring to the process where a solid substance absorbs moisture from the environment and transforms into a liquid state. This phenomenon is commonly observed in certain salts and hygroscopic materials, which attract and retain water vapor. As they interact with humidity, these substances lose their solid form and dissolve, effectively "melting away." This process highlights the dynamic nature of matter and the influence of environmental conditions on physical states, illustrating how solids can transition to liquids under the right circumstances.

NATIONAL LINGUINE DAY
On September 15, National Linguine Day fills the dinner menu at home and restaurants across the country. If you're anything like us, you are already planning on finding the quickest and easiest way to celebrate this tasty food holiday.
From the Liguria region of Italy, linguine means "little tongues" in Italian. Made from durum semolina flour, linguine is one of the world's oldest kinds of pasta. Fettuccine and linguine both developed around 400 years ago. While both are thin, flat noodles, linguine is narrower and more elliptical in shape. As a result, linguine produces a more delicate pasta. To avoid breakage, pair linguine with thinner, lighter sauces.
However, lighter sauces don't limit linguine's flavor profile. In fact, linguine recipes offer a wide variety of sauces. Whether you prefer spicy pasta or seafood, linguine offers a nice base. It compliments herb and butter sauces nicely, too. When adding fresh vegetables, linguine allows the bright colors to shine. Pesto lovers rave over linguine. Another ingredient that favors linguine is earthy mushrooms.

NATIONAL CREME DE MENTHE DAY
National Crème de Menthe Day on September 15 recognizes the creamy peppermint-flavored liqueur used in cocktails and desserts. Enjoy your favorite combination to celebrate!
Many of the liqueurs we enjoy today started as tonics and cure-alls. And we thank pharmacists for bringing them into existence. Crème de menthe (mint cream) is one of those liqueurs. French pharmacist, Emile Giffard, studied the cooling and digestive properties of mint. His research led him to a recipe for crème de menthe.
Crème de menthe is sweet and mint leaves (usually Corsican mint) give crème de menthe its green color. However, when extracted, the liqueur is colorless. This form of the liqueur is called white crème de menthe. Unless color is essential, both varieties have similar flavors and are interchangeable in recipes.
The traditional formula involves steeping dried peppermint or Corsican mint leaves in grain alcohol for several weeks. This method creates a natural green color. The following steps include filtration and the addition of sugar.
Several cocktails include crème de menthe as an ingredient. Two popular cocktails include Grasshopper and Stinger. Because of mint's digestive qualities, crème de menthe makes an excellent after-dinner drink. Also popular in the kitchen, it is used in many recipes as a flavoring. To make a chilly adult milkshake mix crème de menthe with ice cream. Add chopped pecans or shaved chocolate as a garnish.

A pirate’s life for me
What is the Davy Jones locker, anyway? 10 cool pirate terms explained
Credit: David Dibert
Alongside cowboys and knights, pirates have always been a playtime staple. These historical figures have inspired countless childhood adventures, as well as several timeless characters from movies and books like Captain Hook or Long John Silver. In that sense, pirates’ carefree lifestyle also influenced their unique vocabulary, which has become as synonymous with their culture as their roguish exploits have. We have selected 10 of the most iconic terms and phrases from pirate slang to help us relive those endless afternoons playing with our friends. Enjoy!
1Ahoy
Credit: Steven Beyer
What’s a better way of welcoming you to this article than with a typical pirate salute? "Ahoy" is a versatile sailing term that can be used for greeting, bidding farewell, or simply catching the attention of someone. Being the seafaring adventurers that they were, this word is ever-present in pirate vocabulary and still playfully used by sailors everywhere.
Funnily, the origins of this word can be traced back to a landscape on which a pirate would not be particularly comfortable: Cattle herding. Apparently, "ahoy" comes from adding an extra letter to "hoy", a common English call to drive cattle.
2Scallywag
Credit: Palle Knudsen
The term "scallywag" (also sometimes spelled "scalawag") describes someone who is well-regarded, although he behaves in a somewhat mischievous manner. You can see how this term is now synonymous with pirates: Although these sea bandits were once deeply feared and despised, they are now looked at in a cheekier and devilish light.
What’s interesting is that scallywag was not a popular term during the time when pirates were most prominent (late 17th and 18th century). In fact, it most likely came into use during 19th century America, when the first pirate novels and plays were published.
3Walk the plank
Credit: Sabina Kallari
Leave it to pirates to turn a simple wooden plank into a dreadful symbol. "Walking the Plank" describes a method of execution in which the accused is forced to walk on a wooden plank extended over the side of the ship, often bound and blindfolded.
While nowadays this technique is heavily associated with pirate culture, few (if any) real-life cases of people forced to walk the plank have been documented. In truth, it seems that it has become such a staple from its frequent use in literature and movies featuring pirates.
4Shiver me timbers
Credit: Mateusz Dach
"Shiver me timbers" is an expression that was probably never uttered by a real pirate, but it has become so ingrained in this culture that it is difficult to find a fictional pirate who hasn’t said this phrase at least once. With hindsight, it seems only natural that this phrase has become so popular since it was first said by one of literature’s most iconic pirates.
In Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1883 classic "Treasure Island", the character of Long John Silver (considered by many to be the quintessential fictional pirate) says variations of "shiver me timbers" seven times throughout the novel. These exclamations were used to denote Long John’s surprise, anger, or annoyance, but they all denote an extreme shock, since the timbers referenced are the wooden support frames that hold a ship together.
5Argh!
Credit: Anthony 🙂
Yeah, we know: "Argh" is not a word, but it is the go-to expression for any wanna-be pirate. Want to strike fear into the hearts of your seafaring enemies? Or maybe you just want to add an extra layer of drama to that Halloween costume. In any case, this onomatopoeia is the ultimate sound of anyone who chooses to impersonate a dreaded corsair.
This entry should be titled "sounds with an R associated with pirates", since other similar-sounding onomatopoeias like "yarr" or "‘arr" are also insanely popular. In that sense, trying to trace the origins of these sounds can be a rather daunting task. However, most sources agree that this type of pirate snarling was inspired by actor Robert Newton’s many groundbreaking pirate roles, including Long John Silver in the 1950s adaptation of "Treasure Island" and Blackbeard in 1952s "Blackbeard the Pirate".
6Davy Jones’ Locker
Credit: Jadon Barnes
No, we are not referring to a locked metal compartment where a man named Davy Jones might store his gym equipment. In truth, Davy Jones is the pirates’ very own boogeyman, a legendary spirit hellbent on taking sailors’ lives. In that sense, the expression "Davy Jones’ locker" is used to describe the final resting place of many dreaded pirates: The bottom of the sea.
The first written mention of Davy Jones is attributed to Robinson Crusoe’s author, Daniel Defoe, who mentions in a book the story of an enraged captain threatening to throw his crew to "Davy Jones’ Locker". Some believe the legend was inspired by a real pirate called David Jones, who sailed through the Indian Ocean in the 17th century.
7Hornswoggling
Credit: Tanhauser Vázquez R.
You would think that, for an honest person, being called a pirate would be insulting enough, but did you know that there’s an adjective that can be added to give an extra kick to the deceitful nature of corsairs? By today’s standards, the word "hornswoggling" sounds downright silly, but its meaning is less charming: to "hornswoggle" someone means to cheat or deceive them, usually for monetary gain.
Although the phrase "hornswoggling buccaneer" perfectly describes most pirates, this quirky word is by no means exclusive to them, since it is also associated with cowboys and gunslingers. In any case, we can’t end this entry without reiterating this warning: It doesn’t matter if it sounds like a Dr. Seuss character; don’t trust any hornswoggler you come across.
8Jolly Roger
Credit: Amy Syiek
Have you ever wondered why the quintessential pirate flag is called a "Jolly Roger"? Don’t you agree that the name seems a little too cheerful for such an ominous and threatening symbol? Unless the sunny disposition of a fellow named Roger inspired the first of these black flags, this name doesn’t really make sense.
Well, the truth is that no one really knows when the term Jolly Roger was first used, although we can be certain that it is not connected to the name Roger. The most prevailing theory points to the fact that pirates originally raised plain flags to indicate their would-be targets their intentions, where a red flag meant that no quarter would be given. In that sense, many believe that the term "Jolly Roger" comes from the French expression Joli Rouge, which translates to "pretty red".
9Landlubber
Credit: N.
Would you believe us if we told you that this entry features the most insulting word on this list? Granted, for us non-pirate folks the term "landlubber" doesn’t seem that harsh, but trust us: If you ever call a pirate this, be prepared for a loud and angry response.
As you might have guessed, "landlubber" is a discouraging adjective used to describe anyone not versed in the seafaring ways of the pirates. Basically, anyone who is more comfortable at land than at sea. You can see how a pirate might take offense to this, seeing as how sailing skills are an incredible source of pride for any corsair worth their salt.
10Matey
Credit: Lisa Fotios
We’ll end this article with a pirate term for comradery, which at the end of the day is one of the many things that pirates can teach us: How it feels to belong in a crew. Although pirates were definitively deceitful outlaws, they were bound by a code of honor that focused on trusting in your commander and your crewmates with your life.
In that sense, the word "matey" is one of the most affectionate things a pirate can say to another. This term, which is used for a friend or a comrade, seems to come from the French word matelot, which means "sailor" or "seaman". If you want to end up with more than a few pirate friends, then this is the word for you!

September 15th in History
1853
After being an itinerant preacher for several years, Antoinette Blackwell is ordained as the minister of the Congregational Church of South Butler in New York. Upon her induction, she became the first woman ordained in a recognized denomination in the United States.
1885
Chemist, Constantin Fahlberg, receives a U.S. patent for a sweetener he accidentally discovered. U.S. Patent No. 326, 281 describes the process for making saccharine. The artificial sweetener would revolutionize the dieting world and at turns create chaos in the food industry.
1904
Sterling P. Fergusson launches the first gas weather balloon in the United States. Made of rubber and measuring 6 feet in diameter, the balloon was filled with hydrogen and ascended from the grounds of St. Louis Louisiana Purchase Exposition. The meteorologist, working for the Blue Hill Observatory out of Milton, MA, included instruments for measuring atmospheric conditions at high altitude. The basket also included information for returning the basket once it descended back to Earth.
1928
While conducting experiments on a strain of influenza, Alexander Fleming discovers penicillin. The revolutionary medication served to control bacterial infections and saved millions of lives.
1965
Tapping into the space-exploring imaginations of a generation, the television show Lost in Space premieres.

Jan Ernst Matzeliger – 1852
Matzeliger’s invention demonstrated how innovation often leads to more jobs, not fewer. In 1883, the shoemaker received patent No. 274,207 for a lasting machine that could produce 700 shoes a day. Before his invention, production was slow, and shoes were mostly handmade. However, after his machine was put to use, more employees were required to keep pace with the increased production.
Edward A. Bouchet – 1852
The physicist and teacher became the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in America. He would advocate for better educational opportunities for his students and was a member of the Franklin Institute and the American Academy of Political and Social Science.
William Howard Taft – 1857
The 27th president of the United States was more than a politician. After serving his presidential term, Taft continued his distinguished law career and became the 10th chief justice of the United States. In 1911, during his presidential term, he also proposed an idea that became known as the Chamber of Commerce.
Claude McKay – 1889
A student of the Tuskegee Institute and Kansas State College, McKay’s poems and novels spoke of social and political divisions. At the time, his work was a major influence in the Harlem Renaissance. Works like his novel Home to Harlem and poets like If “We Must Die” brought a literary response to the movement.
Agatha Christie – 1890
The prolific mystery writer is also the world’s best-selling author of fiction. With estimates soaring to the 2 billion mark, Christie’s works have also inspired television series and movies.

Tommy Lee Jones – 1946
In his more than 30 year career, the award-winning actor has played such memorable roles as Agent K in Men in Black, Samuel Gerard in The Fugitive and Woodrow F. Call in the television mini-series Lonesome Dove.

Old Streetcar
A photograph by Charles Franck from the archives of The Historic New Orleans Collection is cataloged with the date October 29, 1941, but could possibly be earlier. I suppose that this type of smaller streetcar was popular on the neighborhood lines – easier to navigate corners and probably just a bit less noisy.

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.
This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.
- Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Optional add-ons:
- Shrimp
- Crabmeat
- Chicken
- Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
Fun Facts:
- Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
- Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
- Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
- Our full menu is also available.
- Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.
We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

PENNY DREADFULS: The REMARKABLE ROOMING-HOUSE of MADAME LE MONDE
by Tennessee Williams
It’s Tennessee Williams as you’ve never seen him as these unhinged vignettes probe the macabre corners of the human psyche. Wacky, weird, and wild desire splatters in all directions on the stage as three of Williams’ most outrageous stories come to life in a one-of-a-kind choose-your-own-adventure night of curiosities and creeps. Not for kids and not for the faint of heart!
The night of theatre will also include Williams'
Why Do You Smoke So Much, Lily & The Case Of The Crushed Petunias.
