Week of January 23 - February 1, 2020
“Participation in various after-school programs, and co-curricular programs provides students with the opportunity to acquire leadership, confidence, planning, and social skills that are important for a successful life.”

Dear Southern Door Community,
After-school program activities, the arts, athletics, and clubs can help your children become more well-rounded, provide some quality real-world types of experiences (some of which may expose them to career connections or at least career related skills), and help them develop confidence in a variety of settings. Many of us value these as part of a well-rounded educational experience because we believe there are things that can be learned on the court, on the field, or in an ensemble that may not be easy to replicate in the classroom.

We have worked this year to expand our offerings to engage as many students as possible. In addition to this year's new elementary CCLC after-school program, we now have an after-school middle school homework program, high school tutoring opportunities, a school affiliated Trap Shoot Club (gr. 6-12), Fishing Club (gr. 9-12), as well as the return of the Brett Buhr Archery Club (gr. 4-12).

Please consider encouraging your child's involvement in our after school programs, co-curricular activities, or community programs sponsored through such groups as the YMCA, scouting, or 4-H. These experiences can play a very vital role in their education both directly in terms of helping them develop valuable skills and attitudes, and indirectly cause them to be more connected and engaged in school in general and grow in their capacity to be Eagle Proud and Eagle Strong.

HONEYCOMB DONATION MADE TO SD NATURE CENTER
This is honeycomb made by honeybees during the spring and summer of 2019 in Southern Door. The bees were given an empty super (a large box) at the top of the hive to work in. They filled it with this honeycomb on their own. They came up with the structure themselves as no frames were given inside the box. This is what natural honeycomb would look like in the wild. The base in this box is the underside of the lid at the top of the beehive. This honeycomb was hanging upside down inside the hive when it was being made by the bees. There are no living bees left in this box. All the bees were given the chance to go back to the hive during the days after this was harvested in the fall of 2019. This honeycomb was donated by John and Jennifer Kaser. The box was made by Ben Slezewski.
WILL THERE BE A 15 TH SEASON?

Over the past 14 years, this school wide fundraising event has raised over $350,000 for PreK-12 student programs! In order to continue, the core planning group is recruiting community members willing to take on a leadership role and join their team.

Are you willing to help lead groups of volunteers in the areas of construction, costumes/make-up, painting/props, special effects, marketing, lighting/sound, and safety/security? Work begins in July and wraps up in mid-November. It's been an incredible 14 years, but if The Haunted Mansion is to continue, they need your help!

DEADLINE TO REPLY IS JANUARY 27, 2020. Please email Co-Project Manager, CoryVandertie,  cvandertie@southerndoor.k12.wi.us . An official announcement about the future of The Haunted Mansion will be made in February.
