Art on Ice: Gilded Age Figure Skating -
a Special Virtual Presentation
Tuesday, January 21st @ 6pm
| |
|
Figure skating has changed tremendously in the last 100 years: many of the dramatic jumps, spins and acrobatics of the 21st century were unheard of a century ago, and the clothing, skates, and ice surface of the Gilded Age created a very different sport than the modern one we know. Combining two areas of expertise, Staatsburgh State Historic Site’s curator Maria Reynolds, who is also a competitive figure skater, will explore the popularity of skating during the era as well as demonstrate the maneuvers of Staatsburgh’s former resident Ruth Mills (herself an avid skater).
Sponsored by Dutchess County Library Association, this special virtual program will be screened at the Pleasant Valley Library on Tuesday, January 21st. If you would like to watch the presentation here at the Library, please register here. Space is limited.
If you would rather watch this presentation from home, please click here to sign up to receive the Zoom link by email.

"Free For All: The Public Library"
A Special PBS Movie Screening
Saturday, January 25th @ 12:30pm
| |
Pleasant Valley Library and WMHT Channel 17 Albany Present a Free Preview Screening of PBS Indie Lens Pop-Up "Free for All: The Public Library," by Filmmakers Dawn Logsdon (Producer, Director, Editor) and Lucie Faulknor (Producer, Co-director).
"Free for All: The Public Library" tells the story of the quiet revolutionaries who made a simple idea happen. From the pioneering women behind the “Free Library Movement” to today's librarians who service the public despite working in a contentious age of closures and book bans, meet those who created a civic institution where everything is free and the doors are open to all.
The Film Screening will be followed by a Discussion and Reception, with light refreshments and beverages. We invite you to share your memories of using public libraries, and how a library's books, events, librarians or services may have impacted you and your reading life. How do you feel about Pleasant Valley Library, and how can we best serve you, your interests, and needs, in the future? And share with us the titles and authors of some of your favorite books! Our Director and President of the Friends of the Library will be here to hear your feedback.
