Hello Mai Yang,

As we welcome the month of May, we proudly celebrate National Nurses Week (May 6–12). I would like to take the opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude to the incredible nurses who are part of the backbone of compassionate care throughout our agency. Whether supporting individuals in hospice, or guiding patients through palliative care, their dedication, empathy, and expertise touch lives in ways that words often cannot fully capture.

At the heart of our mission is a commitment to dignity and comfort—and our nurses embody these values every day. Their efforts, especially in times of challenge, remind us what it means to serve with grace and strength.

To every nurse on our team and all of those out in the world, thank you. Your compassion is the reason so many feel seen, supported, and safe.

With deepest appreciation,

Heidi Wingo

Executive Director

Here's to Laura Ptucha-Skoog, Hospice Nurse

“I’m not sure I’d say much at all, not at first. I would just try to listen.”

This in response to the question of how a hospice nurse should respond if patients or family members make demands that seem unreasonable, unwise, or downright impossible.

“Patients and family members in end-of-life situations need to be heard. Sometimes they just need to have their anger and frustrations acknowledged. Sometimes they have an important request. Active listening, including empathetic silence, goes a long way.”

Laura Ptucha-Skoog should know; she has been an R.N. for decades and a nurse at Hospice of the Foothills for the last nine years. She loves her job, including the challenge of facilitating communication. Her ability to talk frankly with terminally ill hospital patients and families drew her to a career in hospice.

“Often,” Laura explains, “the human elements are as challenging as the medical ones. Things like asking the right questions and listening to responses; making sure your patient and their caregivers understand what you are doing and why; verifying that everyone understands where you are in the process; listening to their responses with patience and empathy.”

25th Anniversary of Butterfly Gardens

A cherished Memorial Day tradition in Nevada County, the Butterfly Garden of Remembrance celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, marking a quarter-century of honoring lives, comforting hearts, and supporting compassionate care through the efforts of Friends of Hospice.

This touching tribute began in 2000, nestled in the peaceful grounds of Hooper & Weaver Mortuary. What started as a creative fundraiser quickly blossomed into a treasured community event. Inspired by past Friends of Hospice presidents—Beth Moorhead, Andrea Cox, and Cece Fowler—and made possible through the generosity of Hooper & Weaver owner Kay Baker, the Butterfly Garden took flight. With design support from Gloria Amaral, Pat Casterson, and Dale Peterson, a serene space was created where remembrance and healing could gently unfold. Read More
