Linesight Report: Labour shortage key factor for Canadian construction

The construction industry is expected to contract by 0.9 per cent in 2023 due to reduced residential output, elevated construction costs, and a shortage of skilled labour, says global construction consultant Linesight in its Canada Country Insight and Commodity Report for Q1 2023.

The report predicts moderate economic growth in Canada and a return to normal commodity escalation as supply chain pressures continue to ease, but several challenges remain within the broader construction sector.

Construction trades included in new category-based immigration policy

The federal government has announced it is introducing “category-based selection” for Express Entry, Canada’s economic immigration management system. The process will allow Canada to issue invitations to apply to prospective permanent residents with specific skills, training or language ability. This year, category-based selection invitations will focus on candidates who have work experience in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions; trades, such as carpenters, plumbers and contractors; transport and other categories.

The 32-storey, CDN $187M concrete structure is in the centre of the Vancouver financial district overlooking Vancouver’s waterfront, North Vancouver and the North Shore Mountains.

This new structure includes six levels of below-grade parking, a three-level retail podium, an office tower and several tenant amenity spaces including three outdoor terraces, with a large rooftop terrace that overlooks the entire downtown core.

Modular builds may help construction industry weather a perfect storm

Rising material prices, labour shortages, interest rate hikes and rainy weather have created a perfect storm for the construction industry in the past 12 months, sending many builders to the wall. Of all these factors, weather is the one that most people would cite as being beyond human control. However, a new study out of the UK and Australia suggests this may not be the case. Engineers from Aston University, Birmingham, and the University of South Australia (UniSA) have calculated the potential cost savings for builders using modular production techniques where much of the construction happens offsite in controlled conditions.
