Monsignor Philip Coffey Catholic School
This School Spotlight segment features Monsignor Philip Coffey Catholic School. Thank you to the Philip Coffey staff for taking the time to gather and reflect on the past, present and future of the school.
|
Past: Monsignor Philip Coffey Catholic School is 65 years old! It began as an eight classroom school in September 1959 in response to the growing population in the south Oshawa area. The school was first named St. Philip Catholic School and was later renamed in 1977 by the Board of Trustees in grateful appreciation to Monsignor Philip Coffey who resided in Oshawa for more than 24 years. For 20 of those years, he was the representative of the Durham Region Roman Catholic Seperate School Board. He helped organize fundraising activities for the expansion of churches and schools in the Durham Region.
Present: We offer our student body a wide variety of clubs and teams. We have a Calm Club for over lunch time, a Chess Club, Knot Club, Art Club, Eco Club, Book Club, Jigsaw Puzzle Club, Folk Dance Club and even a Ukulele Club! We also send teams to every tournament including a Cricket Team and this year our Jr. Boys Basketball Team finished first in their tournament. We are also excited to be making great use of our new state-of-the-art child care centre that opened in 2022.
Future: This spring we are excited to have our outdoor Kindergarten area renovated to include artificial turf, a rubberized play area, a triple hoop, an outdoor chalk board, lots of wooden seating, logs for climbing and other wood planters and even some painted pavement games.

2023-2024 Student Demographic Survey
|
It is the mission of the Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB) to be an inclusive Catholic learning community that inspires every student to achieve their full potential through faith and education.
In order to effectively support every student in reaching their full potential, resources and supports need to be aligned with student needs. To assist in making evidence-based and informed decisions about supports and resource allocation, we will be conducting a Student Demographic Survey from April 22-26, 2024. Collecting demographic data allows the board to better analyze the trends and patterns in student achievement and student success.
We have outlined information about the Student Demographic Survey on our board and school websites and includes a preview of the survey questions and answers to frequently asked questions.
Please visit dcdsb.ca/StudentSurvey to learn more.

Black Excellence Museum at St. Theresa Catholic School
From the start of 2024, students at St. Theresa Catholic School in Whitby have been researching Black individuals from history who represent excellence in their fields. Students were asked to find people they could personally connect with who embody a personal quality of leadership, motivation, strength, empowerment, creativity, bravery, resilience, strong work ethic, care for others, or determination. Each grade was given a challenge to highlight the historical figures through a specific medium of inquiry. All of these projects were presented for public viewing at the school on March 27, 2024.
