Information for caregivers to help children thrive!

DFX supports the rights of children with disabilities to have equitable access to education as guaranteed
in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)

We are deeply concerned by the recent effort to drastically reduce staffing and funding within the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS).

We applaud the temporary restraining order issued on October 15 by a judge in the US District Court in northern California, which paused the reduction in force.

The proposed layoffs and elimination of funding threaten the rights and protections guaranteed to children with disabilities under federal law. These changes jeopardize essential supports for children with disabilities in Colorado and across the nation, undermining access to services, oversight, and accountability that ensure every child’s right to a free and appropriate public education.

We call for continued oversight, transparency, and action to rescind these harmful changes and to restore—and indeed strengthen—the federal commitment to children with disabilities. Our children, in every state, deserve nothing less.

Support for Travelers at Denver International Airport (DEN)

photo of travelers in Denver airport

Traveling can be stressful for anyone, and extra challenging for families traveling with a member who has additional needs. DFX has a unique partnership with Denver International Airport (DEN) and the City of Denver that enables us to raise awareness of ways in which DEN can work to improve the travel experience for those with sensory and developmental differences.

DEN is firmly committed to creating a welcoming space where travelers of all abilities can navigate successfully, and works with employees of the airlines, TSA, and airport vendors to work toward this goal. From time to time, we will highlight these efforts.

DFX partnered with DEN to create a digital guide to navigating airport travel for families who have a child with additional needs. We'll be updating the Guide in the new year and invite your suggestions for things we should add!

TSA Cares is a program of the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA), the federal workforce that manages security checkpoints in airports across the country.

Travelers who have a family member with special needs or others who may find the security screening process stressful or intrusive because of a medical condition, their religious beliefs, age, mobility limitations, need to travel with a service animal, or other unique circumstances can request special assistance.

To do this, travelers complete an online request, ideally more than 72 hours prior to departure. A TSA Cares representative can assist you and those in your travel party in navigating through the security checkpoint.

If you need additional assistance to get from security to the gate, or during your flight, you need to contact your airline directly to manage that portion of your trip.

Do you know that DFX has a lending library?

DFX has an amazing array of resources that families, teachers, and clinicians can borrow. The DFX Resource Library includes books for adults and children in English and Spanish, plus digital resource materials written by our team to address various aspects of child development and strategies for supporting kids with unique needs. Beyond publications, we have tools and materials to loan folks to use them in the home or classroom before investing in their own versions. Above are pictures of a few awesome books we have available - a book about feelings, one about finding authenticity and figuring out who you are, and The Whole Brain Child in Spanish.

Talk to your therapist or developmental navigator to learn what is available that might be helpful for you!

We're getting ready for our year-end fundraising campaign, so you can expect a few additional emails from us during the next few months. We'll be reaching out to help you understand how your support, no matter the amount, can make a profound impact for the children we serve.

The last two months of the year are an important time for organizations seeking support - in general, nonprofits receive about 40% of annual donations during November and December, and this is true for DFX.

Thank you for helping us bring Therapy that fits®  to more kids!
