The University of Toronto's Recent Research at CK!

Two weekends ago, a group of upper-year students from the University of Toronto came to Camp Kawartha to conduct some fascinating environmental research for their courses!

The students measured snow depth and snow density across different land cover types, including forests, open areas, and lake ice, to see how the snow properties differ between wet, fluffy, deep, and other characteristics.

They then used the measurements to learn how to calculate a spatially representative snow depth for a large area and determine how much water is held in the snowpack before the snow melts.

The students also learned about the different layers in the lake ice, how they form, and how they are affected by the overlying snow.

According to their professor, this was a fantastic chance for them to see firsthand what they learned about in lectures!

We look forward to seeing UofT again at their next weekend facility visit!

Volunteers Make Important Contributions!

We value our volunteers! They do so much for us – everything from data entry to helping with sales in the Gift Store; from helping keep the sites clean and functioning to helping make videos. In other words, volunteers are a vital part of the Camp Kawartha team.

Ava Richardson earns the Peterborough Agricultural Innovation Award!

Congratulations to our Outdoor Educator, Ava Richardson, for being presented with the Peterborough Agricultural Innovation Award earlier this month!

The award was presented by the Peterborough Agricultural Roundtable, and was given in recognition of Hello Farm, Ava Richardson and Kiyotami (Zenryu) Owatari's organically-grown market in Havelock, which offers over 100 types of vegetables.

After farming for eight years together in Japan, the two moved to Ontario in 2021 and started implementing Japanese farming techniques on Canadian soil, such as using a biochar chimney to create charcoal from plant matter.

Agricultural innovations like this have resulted in a double increase in yields and profits for their farm in just one year!

Way to go Ava and Zenryu! Read more about their impressive achievement on Global News.

Camp Kawartha is Hiring Canoe Trippers to Join our Summer Team!

Are you passionate about working with children and exploring the great outdoors?

Camp Kawartha is looking for enthusiastic individuals with experience in Canoe Tripping who have a passion for the outdoors and working with children.

Our Canoe Trippers are essential players in our summer camp team! Canoe trip leaders have the responsibility of leading our canoe trip excursions to the Kawartha Highlands and Algonquin Park.

In this role, Canoe Trippers will have the opportunity to share their love of the outdoors by taking campers on excursions that prioritize safety, fun, and learning about the natural world!

If you think you might be interested in working as a canoe tripper this summer, please email our Summer Camp Director, Emma, at emma@campkawartha.ca to learn more and apply!

Don't Miss Your Spot at Summer Camp!

Session Spaces Still Available in Sessions B, D and N!

Looking for an awesome opportunity for your child this summer, where they'll have the chance to make new friends, form lasting memories, get connected to nature and join a close-knit community, all while surrounded by the natural world? Camp Kawartha still has some spaces left in our 3-night session, Session N, which runs from August 25th to 28th, and some remaining spaces in our 2-week sessions, Session B (running from July 7th to July 19th) and Session D (running from July 28th to August 9th).

Two-week sessions are a great chance for campers to form a deeper connection to their camp experience. Through being immersed in our camp community for two weeks, campers will have the opportunity to develop their skills in our activity areas, make stronger bonds with their cabinmates, engage in more theme days, and build upon their leadership skills.

Not sure about overnight camp? First time away from home? Our introductory 3-night session at the very end of our summer season is perfect for newer campers who are looking to test the waters of overnight camp, but are still building up their confidence before diving into a longer session. Session N includes all the action-packed fun of a regular session but is specifically designed as an introduction to camp for those looking to give it a try for the first time.

To inquire about three-night or two-week sessions, please reach out to our team and we'd be happy to tell you more about all that they have to offer!

Interested in a nature-filled Summer Camp experience closer to Peterborough?

A few spaces remain in the following Environment Centre Summer Day Camp sessions:

  • EC Day Camp week 1 (Ages 7 to 12)
  • EC Day Camp week 5 (Ages 7 to 12)
  • Woodland Adventures Camp (Ages 12 to 15)
  • EC Leadership Program (Ages 14 to 16)
