Spring has Sprung!

Despite the damp and chilly weather, Spring is officially here reminding us that April showers will bring forth sun and flowers in May. This month, we place special emphasis on two widespread physical and mental health disparities that continue to disproportionately impact communities of color.

National Minority Health Month is dedicated to raising awareness about the health disparities that affect minority populations and promoting access to quality healthcare for all communities. The origin of National Minority Health Month was established in 1915 by Booker T. Washington’s National Negro Health Week. A concurrent resolution from the U.S. Congress encouraged “all health organizations and Americans to conduct appropriate programs and activities to promote healthfulness in minority and other communities experiencing health disparities.” Click here to learn more about this initiative.

This year’s theme of “Advancing Commitments to Eliminate Health Disparities” is core to the work that we do at CHA to inform and empower to eliminate the many disparities that our communities experience. Join me at the Black Health & Early Detection Expo at UMass Boston on April 18 where I’ll be one of the panel of experts discussing how we can stay healthy and detect health issues early.

This month we’re also recognizing Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), a time dedicated to raising awareness about sexual violence and educating communities on how to prevent it. Deborah Collins-Gousby, COO at the Brookview House in Dorchester, quoted in Commonwealth Magazine that "Black women are four times more likely to be killed from intimate partner violence and make up 22% of sexual and domestic violence cases nationwide…” Click here to read the full article.

Once again, the more we educate ourselves and our communities about the array of factors that contribute to these disparities, the stronger we become as impactful advocates of change. To learn more about local resources and tools available to victims of sexual assault and abuse, visit the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center and Jane Doe, Inc.

Let’s keep the momentum of connection and communication going by continuing to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn! Your continued support and engagement with CHA matters and makes a difference in the good work that we’re collectively doing for our great city.

Blessings!
