Oregon Horse Council Launches Committees
As we mentioned with our name change last fall, the Oregon Horse Council is working to do more for the industry as a whole statewide. Our board recently had our annual planning retreat, where a handful of committees were established to help us with our project areas. Committees are conducted by email and conference call, and anyone is welcome to join! Please contact us if you are interested in helping in any of the areas below. More committee maybe added, please let us know if there is an area you believe we should focus on and our board will consider it.

  • Education: This group will work on our online content, webinar series, Know Your Industry events, and a new equine education conference.

  • Legislative Advisory: This committee will look over local, regional, state, and national issues effecting the horse industry and provide recommendations to our board as to what stand OHC should take.

  • Outreach: Focusing on introducing the equine lifestyle to non-equestrians. This group may have a physical presence at non-horse events.

  • Health/Wellness: Working on education for potential and current horse owners on items such as the cost and needs of owning a horse, end of life planning, estate planning for your horses, etc.
OHC is Offering A New Program
Did you enroll yet in the Get Out & Ride Oregon program?
The Get Out and Ride OREGON Program (GOROP) was created to encourage equestrians to enjoy their horses in a non-competitive way. OHC acknowledges and awards riders at benchmarks of ride time. Our program is open to anyone who lives in Oregon and has access to riding a horse – we encourage everyone to participate!

HOW IT WORKS: Participants must register online (or by paper form) and pay an annual fee, which allows you to accumulate hours for 365 days. You may join the program at any time, however hours only count that are accrued after joining. Logs may be turned in anytime an achievement level is reached. Our office will keep record of your hours.

The Oregon Horse Council is excited to bring back to Oregon the 2-day Awareness course in Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue (TLAER). These sessions are taught by world-renouned expert, Dr. Rebecca (Gimenez) Husted.

This training is open to anyone, but will be specifically geared towards fire department personnel, first responders, veterinarians, search & rescue members, animal rescue specialists, livestock breeders, horse trainers, and any large animal owner that wants to be more prepared. Our organization decided to do this training after we had heard from several first responders that there hadn’t been a course like this in the region and that they needed the training. We have been surprised at the enthusiasm for these trainings – 100 people attended the last session in McMinnville and we expect future courses to sell out as well.

Entering the third year of the Strategic Plan, US Equestrian President Murray Kessler told Annual Meeting attendees that equestrian sport’s national governing body has much to celebrate and more to accomplish.
Safe Sport Update
Very Important!
US Equestrian Announces New Safe Sport Training Requirements
On August 27, 2018, the US Equestrian Board of Directors approved a rule change requiring that effective January 1, 2019 , all US Equestrian (USEF) adult members with a Competing Membership must complete USEF’s Safe Sport Training in order to be eligible to participate in USEF activities. Members can immediately access the free Safe Sport Training directly through their member dashboard or can click here  to learn more.

We encourage members to complete the training as soon as possible. US Equestrian President Murray Kessler stated, “I am very proud of the work done in drafting this proposal and the Board of Directors which approved this critical rule designed to keep our children safe while they enjoy, excel, and advance in our sport.”

The rule has three main requirements. Sections 1 and 2 are already in effect and Section 3 has been added:
1. Every USEF member and Federation Participant* shall abide by USEF’s Safe Sport Policy and the U.S. Center for SafeSport Code of Conduct. *As described by the USEF Safe Sport Policy, a Federation Participant is any USEF member or non-member, who participates in, or attends a USEF-licensed competition or sanctioned event.
2. In order to comply with S. 534, the Protecting Young Victim’s from Sexual Abuse and Safe Sport Authorization Act of 2017, the USEF Safe Sport Policy, and the Center’s SafeSport Code of Conduct, every USEF adult member and USEF participant, with the exception of the victim, is required to report suspected sexual misconduct within 24 hours to the appropriate authorities and to the U.S. Center for SafeSport.
3. Beginning January 1, 2019, every USEF adult member with a Competing Membership must complete USEF’s Safe Sport Training, as approved by the U.S. Center for SafeSport (the Center).

A 30-day grace period to complete the awareness training will be provided to all members who renew or join on or after December 1, 2018. Members joining prior to December 1, 2018 will have until January 1, 2019 to complete the training. Those who do not complete the training within the grace period will be ineligible to participate in USEF activities, including competitions.

The Safe Sport Policy and the rules that govern it have been created to protect all athletes from misconduct within the sport. This new rule is consistent with our efforts to ensure the safety and welfare of equestrian participants, especially minors. Education and training everyone is crucial to protecting athletes and eradicating abuse in our sport.

Additional information and resources on Safe Sport, how to report sexual and non-sexual misconduct, access to a free training module for parents of equestrian athletes, a Safe Sport FAQ, the Safe Sport Sanction list and more can be found here .

It’s flu season—not just for people, but for horses, too. Dr. Nimet Browne of Hagyard Equine Medical Institute explains how to protect your horse

Equine influenza outbreaks have been making headlines lately on both sides of the Atlantic, prompting horse owners and managers to review their biosecurity and vaccine protocols. Equine flu isn’t usually fatal, but it is highly contagious and can cost a horse weeks of training and competition time. Dr. Nimet Browne of Hagyard Equine Medical Institute talks through what you need to know about equine flu and steps you can take to help protect your horse—including vaccination.

Feedback On The Convention
From Our Western Region Directors
Happy February to all!

For those of you in the Pacific Northwest, I hope you all are back to your normal routine after our multiple snowstorms. Hope all of your Morgans stayed warm and toasty. Just like a big dog, I can say my 33 years young Morgan LOVED the snow!

I just returned from the AMHA Convention in San Antonio, and what a great Convention it was! Thank you to Dianne Lents for hosting the fantastic barn day! It was an amazing day and an amazing barn.

The private day at Sea World was so special. Such a magical day seeing all of the animals and hearing about their programs and animal training. Thank you to Dragonsmeade and Ledyard Farms for sponsoring a great day at Sea World.

Saturday morning was a fun Howard Schatzberg Golf Tournament. There were great prizes on all 18 holes! More prizes, trophies, and golf bags to the winners! Everyone who attended had a great time in spite of the cold. Thank you, Howie, for putting on such a great event!

The Convention had many great speakers, speaking on a wide variety of subjects. They were great to hear and learn from! Thank you to all of the speakers.

Along with seeing old Morgan friends and meeting new ones, the Convention had a great vibe. The message was We Are ALL One! We have a great community and we have each other’s back. No matter what we do with our Morgan horses we are ALL ONE!

The meetings went well. See above for the highlights.

Respectfully submitted,

Carol Fletcher
AMHA Western Region Director

Hello Folks,

I just returned from the AMHA Convention. The first quarter AMHA Board of Directors Meeting and the AMHA Annual Meeting of the members was held in conjunction with the convention.

First off, I want to thank all of you for voting. You all did great. We reached a quorum in our region without any prompting from me. Good job! Secondly, thank you for allowing me to be your representative for another three years. Lastly the Board voted for me to be President of AMHA for another year. I hope to represent all members to the best of my capabilities.

What a convention is was! So much fun. Great seminars from War Veterans and their interaction with horses to education revolving around the controversial Safe Sport Topic.

Dan Mills from the US Safe Sport Center on Wednesday gave the Safe Sport Training live to 16 lucky participants. They are now certified for the year. It is agreed that the live training was very beneficial. The following day there was an open forum which was all about safe sport. Dan Mills from US Safe Sport, Bill Moroney and Teresa Roper from USEF, where there for the Q & A. First a 20- minute video was presented to the audience with USEF attorney Sonja Keating doing the presentation. It was so well received USEF has agreed to make it available for all to watch. It basically answered all questions and concerns that have caused so much angst in the past. We will be providing a link on our website as soon as it becomes available. Many questions were asked and all were answered. Many members who went into this forum with trepidation walked out feeling much more comfortable with the topic as far as perceived issues were concerned.

Later that morning we boarded buses with a box lunch in hand for the trip to Twisted Rose Ranch. Dianne Lents proved to be the hostess with the mostess. What a beautiful and functional facility this is. There were many references to the previous owner Patrick Swayze thru-out the ranch. Tommy Garland and Tom Bombolis gave great demonstrations. Mr. Bombolis was assisted by Hanna Johnson. There was an absolutely delicious BBQ after that, meanderings around the ranch and much comradery. Later that evening we were entertained by a DJ on the dance floor upstairs. (Think Patrick Swayze!) There was wine and bourbon tasting to top off the evening of festivities.

The following day we went to Sea World. Overnight the temperature dropped significantly and it was in the mid 30s at one point. Hey, we Morgan people are tough! We had the whole theme park to ourselves and we had a special tour and close encounters with sea lions and porpoises. The lunch was chicken cacciatore (no, not fish) and it was very good. We watched fish swimming around us as we ate. The speaker was a previous trainer now promoted to customer relations and tours. His spot on comparisons to training all animals was so insightful.

We returned to attend the AMHA Annual Meeting of the Members. This was followed by the Stallion Service Auction Gala, were some awards were given. Again, much festivities.

Saturday was the day of forums, discussions, and seminars. That evening the awards banquet was held. Congratulations to the Sacramento Club for winning club of the year. During the banquet four items that had been generated for the silent auction were live auctioned. A condo vacation at Disney World donated by Kate Kirsch, Grand National banner donated by the Grand National, a Las Vegas Rodeo and Cowboy Christmas package donated by Terri Sturm, and a print of Justify, the 2018 Triple Crown winner- signed by jockey Mike Smith. The print showed Justify winning the three races of the Triple Crown. That was donated by myself. Terri Sturm generously offered a second package when bidding became very intense on her donation package. More than 10k was raised with just those items. Again, much festivities!

It was agreed that this was a very good convention. A lot of fun and a lot less business seemed to be the key. Congratulations to the convention committee for coming up with a whole new concept. It worked.

Below you will find a condensed review of the First Quarter Board Meeting that was held at the Convention.

If you have any questions, concerns or comments please feel free to contact me at my new email address morgan4show@gmail.com. Again, thank you for the privilege of serving as your regional representative and President.

Mari Sanderson
AMHA President/Western Region AMHA Director

~~~
Hello to Everyone in the Western Region,
The AMHA Convention in San Antonio, Texas was over the top with planned activities, social functions, meetings, and forums. The highlight for me was definitely spending a day at Twisted Rose Farm outside of Kerrville. This is a gorgeous 240-acre ranch with amazing facilities, the best part being the ballroom over the barn that Patrick Swayze used to dance in. I have missed having Dianne Lents and her competitive Morgan horses on the West Coast, but she has outdone herself with this spread, so I doubt there is any coming back. Thank you, Dianne Lents, for a fabulous day!
Other Convention highlights were the very successful AMHECT/MWF Stallion Service Auction on Friday evening, raising more than $68,000, and the Awards ceremony on Saturday night. Ours is a very special community and we heard many heartfelt and grateful comments attesting to this spirit we all share. Many congratulations to all of this year’s honorees.
Breeding season and show season is now upon us. An interesting take home from our Board meetings is that Morgan registrations were up 25 percent in 2018. This is great news for the future growth of our breed. Indeed, our farm’s first foal for 2019 arrived in late January. I look forward to seeing pictures of all your new foal arrivals posted on social media.
The first major show in our region is Carousel Charity in Scottsdale, Arizona, in mid-March and AMHA will be hosting its judging school again. I encourage all of you who compete to make a serious attempt to start your year out with this show. It is fun and the weather is typically fantastic.
I look forward to seeing you all down the road this year.
All my best,
Terri Sturm
AMHA Western Region Director
1st Quarter AMHA Board Of Directors
Meeting Highlights
Below you will find highlights from the AMHA Board of Directors First Quarter Meeting, which took place February 7, 2019, in San Antonio, Texas during the AMHA Annual Meeting & Convention and included 53 guests in attendance.
First Quarter Board Meeting Highlights
AMHECT: Special thanks were provided to outgoing Trustees Sherry Cole, Sara Foy, Sally Plumley and Georgie Green for their longtime dedication and service to the American Morgan Horse Educational Charitable Trust.
Recognition: Certificates of Appreciation were approved for Dianne Lents in recognition of her Twisted Rose Farm for hosting the Convention’s “clinic day” and Dragonsmeade and Ledyard Farms for making the “behind the scenes and luncheon at Sea World” possible.
Home Office: Executive Director Carrie Mortensen noted that the 2019 Hybrid election had been successful with voting up by 5.31% (at the time of the Board meeting) and that 71% used the paper ballot compared to online voting. The open competition and star awards were calculated and reported prior to convention. A page was created on the AMHA website dedicated to Safe Sport. The audit is currently underway by CPA firm McSoley, McCoy and Company. The Museum Director position was eliminated and requests for research have been temporarily shut down until the transition can be completed with the new Pineland Farm exhibit (see more below).
National Museum of the Morgan Horse (NMMH): The Board officially approved the agreement to place an exhibit of the NMMH at Pineland Farm in New Gloucester, Maine, where Rick Lane is the resident trainer and manager. Photos of the facility were shown to the guests in the audience as well as the intent to establish an exhibit, a research library, a research station and a walk of honor (hallway to display AMHA Awards). Pineland Farm receives thousands of guests each year and AMHA is excited to be able to put the NMMH into that venue. More information will be provided as the exhibit moves forward. A design consultant has been retained to work with Pineland Farm to immediately begin the establishment of this endeavor.
Bylaws: Chair Carol Fletcher reported the work of the Bylaws Committee that included the review of the many AMHA Standard Operating Procedures. A motion was approved to eliminate current SOP’s numbered A15, A19, A20, A22, A30, A31, A33 and A35 due to the fact they are either already in the Bylaws or AMHA Directors Guide and do not require another source to document these policies. The Committee is also working on incorporating A1, A6, A7, A9, All, A14, A25, A34 and A36 by incorporating any that are not already in the Directors Guide into such and will review a redline draft of those recommendations at their second quarter meeting in April. Further review and research were still required on the remaining SOP’s A3, A4, A10, A13, A23 and A27. The Committee is continuing to research attendance policies of similar organizations as well.
Registry: Chair Tony Lee reported a positive gain of 25 percent for year ending 2018. The workload in the office continues to be brisk, but expertly handled by the Registry staff. The Amish outreach program recently provided $4,000 in revenue from transactions obtained (outside of auction transfers) from the Mid-Atlantic sale in January. An updated markings diagram was approved for the registration certificate which will include all four side views of each leg. This change will not appear until it is time to reorder registration certificates. The application will be updated at that same time. It was agreed that a one-page flyer supplied by the World Morgan Futurity will be provided to owners with all future registrations.
Finance Report: Chair Kate Kirsch shared the latest fund balances and confirmed that the 2018 audit was currently underway, but could not be completed in time for this earlier than usual annual meeting/convention in Texas. However, current “pre-audit” financials are projecting an estimated profit of between $80,000 and $90,000 depending on the auditor’s final adjustments and depreciation expenses. Total liabilities & net assets ending 12.31.18 was reported as $1,190,148.29. Once the final audit is complete, the data will be posted on the members only side of the website. Unexpected legal fees now totaling over $8,000 incurred due to inquires received from attorney Craig Nolan on behalf of Central Region Director Vicki Bennett were also reported. USEF Rules Committee: Chair Cindy Mugnier explained that there were no new Morgan rule changes currently in the pipeline for review in the coming year, but that the Committee is undertaking the task to research and incorporate Ranch Rules into the Morgan Division. In addition, she provided a detailed explanation of the governance structure of US Equestrian and how our representation on the US Equestrian Board of Directors is based on the number of USEF members that indicate their “primary” breed or discipline as Morgan. Therefore, it was stressed how important and valuable it was for everyone to renew their USEF membership for the coming year so that the Morgan “voice” would continue to be heard and have direct participation in the current governance structure. This is not the time to lose our place at the table of influence.
American Horse Council Update: The Board was provided with the annual update from the American Horse Council that outlined their efforts and initiatives over the past year including the areas of Legislative & Policy, Health & Regulatory/Protection & Preservation, and Industry Sustainability & Growth. The AHC Annual Conference is scheduled for June 9-12 in Washington, D.C. It was noted that a copy of this letter would be posted on the Members Only side of the website for AMHA members with interest in further details. Additional updates were provided on some of the progress of the recent discussions between Affiliate Organizations and US Equestrian at their January convention and the announcement of the upcoming Affiliate Organization/US Equestrian Retreat for further discussion and planning.
Joint Leadership Council: At the January UPHA Annual Meeting and Convention, the AMHA leadership and administration was invited to attend an informational meeting of all the breeds and disciplines associated with the United Professional Horsemen’s Association. A Joint Leadership Council was suggested and the AMHA was invited to participate along with the American Saddlebred Horse Association, The American Hackney Horse Society, the American Road Horse and Pony Association and the UPHA. The Joint Leadership Council Mission states it will work on presenting one clear message to USEF outlining concerns and remedies, and this Council will also be tasked with determining options if negotiations with USEF are unsuccessful. This Council is charged with facilitating and effecting positive change. The Board approved to have AMHA participate in this joint venture.
2019 AMHA Board Meetings: The 2019 Quarterly Meetings were announced as follows:
Second Quarter: April 4-6, 2019 in Portland, ME
Third Quarter: Sept. 5-7, 2019 in Las Vegas, NV
Fourth Quarter: Nov. 7-9, 2019 in Lexington, KY
The membership is reminded that they are always welcome to attend the Quarterly Board meetings in person or teleconference. Call-in information is provided via our global e-mail newsletter prior to each meeting.
Future Conventions: The first quarter 2020 meeting will be held in conjunction with the UPHA Annual Meeting in January in Lexington, Kentucky as we will not be hosting a complete, traditional AMHA Convention in 2020 but rather scheduling the board meeting, annual meeting, and shortened award event during the UPHA Convention. Tentatively, we are planning to return to a traditional AMHA Annual Meeting & Convention schedule in February of 2021 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mark your calendars now!
