The St James Men’s Intramural Combo Tennis League completed its ten-week season on November 9th. Ninety-six men forming six teams played a series of ten matches, facing each of the other teams twice during the season. Rosters were composed of players from skill levels 2.5 through 4.0. Captains worked to ensure competitive matches on all courts, with the target being a 7.5 team on court 1, a 6.5 team on court 2, and a 5.5 or 6.0 team on court 3. They were
largely successful in achieving the goal of competitive matches as the total games won for all six teams were quite close. In the end, the team captained by Mike Holstein came out on top of the standings. Mike’s team members were Jeff Watts, Steve Volk, Dennis Hergenreter, Mark Studt, Dave Filios, Jim Fania, Steve Zaharuk, Bob Ames, Dave Roche, Larry Rogers, Andy Elsea, John Brannelly, Juan Fernandez, Jeff Rulis, Kevin Power and Richard Hamilton.
Final league standings were as follows:
Mike Holstein 8-2
Dave McNamara 7-3
Tim O’Connor 6-4
Bill Kozub 5-5
Scott Colburn 3-7
Jim McLoughlin 1-9
League play was open to all Golf and Sport members of The Clubs at St James. Members can expect that rosters for the spring leagues will begin forming after the new year. They should watch for information on signing up to play from the St James Tennis Association and from The Clubs at Saint James.

Jimmies Softball
November 9, 2021
The Jimmies had the tying run on second base in the bottom of the 7th inning but failed to score as Ocean Ridge held on to win 17 to 16 in the first game of the double header last Tuesday. Dave Sleight, Kevin Lynch and Rodney Mull lead the offensive attack for the Jimmies with 4 hits each. Mark Bradcovich and Tommy Boggs chipped in with 3 hits. In the second game, the Jimmies held off a late Ocean Ridge rally to capture a 15 to 11 win. Bradcovich, Sleight and Lynch each collected 3 hits. Tony Rollins blasted a triple and, along with
Brian Blackmer, added 2 hits. Chuck Ott pitched the win for the Jimmies.
The double header split gives the Jimmies a record of 8 wins and 8 losses. They will need to sweep in a double header showdown with Winding River next Tuesday. Two wins to end the season would give the Jimmies a chance at either 3rd or 4th place in the final standings.
The regular season final double header vs Winding River will be played at Smithville Park beginning at 9:15AM.
Brunswick County Senior Softball Standings as of 11/11:
Bombers - 11 wins/5 losses
Coastal Tire -11 wins/5 losses
Winding River – 9 wins/7 losses
Team USA – 8 wins/8 losses
SJ Gators – 8 wins/8 losses
Ocean Ridge – 8 wins/8 losses
St James Jimmies - 8 wins/8 losses

Bounce Back Week
The first place Wise Guys, led by Bill Doody’s 635(239,232) - the high scratch series of the night, and Bret Sigillo’s 245 gem - the high scratch game of the night, recovered from last week’s three losses and won all four points to maintain their two point lead on team Express, who also swept all four points,
with Doug Voegtlin - 591(214,204) and Jack D’Ambrosio - 585(209,214) leading the way. The Nor’easters (Ray Cook -586(201), Dave Zentmayer -550(237), and Ron Hawkins- 44(211)) also kept pace with four points and are now in third place just three points behind.
The Wise Guys bowled the team high scratch game, the Express the team high handicap game, and the Nor’easters both the team high scratch and handicap series. In addition to those mentioned above, other notable scores were rolled by: Rich Plant - 604(223,212), Kevin Kremler - 556(203), Dennis Mancinelli - 545(201), Dave Matthews - 542(234), John Lanoue - 527(202) , Rich Wantuck - 526, Robert Farrell - 525, Charlie Dudley - 508, Tom Green - 501, and Chuck Walsten - 204.
Finally, my apologies to Sam Stern, captain of team Split Happens, for failing to recognize his 214 game from the previous week. The absence of recognition for his scores this week was self inflicted.

Week ending November 12, 2021
Tuesday, November 9
Cloudless day with NNE soft winds; 4 knots reversing to the South at 5 knots at most. This caused a lot of slow portions of races but then excitement built as puffs came from left, right, or any direction. Because of the light winds, the RO set out a simple & short course. (There still were blunders at the marks...) But the weather was great, breaking the chill of earlier Oct. Eight Nirvana class boats battled it out with Harry Howard garnering two 1sts, and Charlie Sweeney, Terry McCormick, Pete Flynn and Dan Deets each getting a win. Neal Boucher and Carolyn Sherwin each had two 2nds, with Ken Bates also competing but had to leave early. It was great to see seven Dragon boats competing – twice as many as recent weeks. The soft winds created many crowded roundings of the marks and close finishes. Tony DeFilippis won three races outright and had a 2nd . Charlie Sweeney won two and Steve Stopa also had a win. Dick Denzler had three 2nds and Ken Bates had another. Ron Hawkins and Sandy Graham also competed in the ‘doldrums day’.
Thursday, November 11
Eleven Nirvanas raced against a shifting wind starting from the North and then to the South about 5-8 knots. Carolyn S. as RO set up a course to take speedy advantage of the crosswinds. This did, however resulting in a LOT of crowding around Marker #1. Ray Cook had two 1sts, while Bruce Blomgren, Charlie
Sweeney, Ken Bates, and Neal Boucher each had a win. Charlie also got two 2nds, with Ken, Harry Howard, Kevin Richter, and Terry McCormick each garnering a 2nd place. Ron Hawkins secured a 3rd. While Dick Denzler and Pete Flynn raced, both had to leave early. The Dragon boats benefitted from both the winds as well as a happily enlarged fleet again. Seven skippers raced with results as follows: Ken Bates and Tony DiFilippis each had two wins, with Dick Denzler and Steve Stopa garnering one each. Steve also had three 2nds , with Tony, Ken and Charlie Sweeney each getting a 2nd.

Week 2 of the St. James Bocce League was a cold and windy day. After cleaning the courts from Saturday’s storm, the High Rollers led by Marcia Leeds faced off against Bada Bing under the guidance of Captain Paul Tracy. It was a see-saw battle on each court as the teams split their first two games. Then the High Rollers won the final game on each court to seal a 6-3 victory with Anita DeFillipis and Tony Pace on Court 1, Tony DeFillipis and Marcia Leeds on Court 2, and Ed Rau and Tony Sappio on Court 3.
The second match had Captain Nat Scaccianoce’s Bocce Blasters square off against Captain Jerry Klawitter’s Rolling Thunder. Rolling Thunder pulled out a close win 5-4. Epitomizing the closeness of the match was the play on Court 3 where the Bocce Blasters’ Nat Scaccianocce and Karen del Sordo battled
Rolling Thunder’s Bob Kunze and Al Sloan. The second game was won by Rolling Thunder in a close 9-8 contest. Then Bocce Blasters flipped the script and pulled out the third game 9-8. With five teams this season, Bada Bing led by Captain Paul Tracy received the bye for the week.
With two weeks in the books, the league standings are:
