Moving for Brain Health

As a nerd who loves structured learning, I'm having a great time doing my continuing education.

Last week I completed the first of four modules in my Brain Health Trainer course. I've always thought exercise was good for everyone- I wouldn't have become a personal trainer otherwise! So as I studied the first module, it excited me that the research has shown again and again that exercise is excellent not just for physical wellbeing, but for brain health.

While certain elements of cognition slow as part of the natural aging process (but not all!), exercise has been shown to be protective against Alzheimer's Disease and other forms of Dementia. Starting now is the perfect time to move for better brain health!

Another key takeaway from my Brain Health Trainer course is that the brain loves novelty. So how can you apply the concept of novelty to your own training?

If you are already exercising, but have been doing the same routine for a while, I encourage you to change things up. This could be something as simple as doing the same exercises in a different order or as complex as learning a new type of movement such as a new sport or switching from weight machines to free weights.

If you haven't been exercising, most things will be novel to the brain so there really isn't a wrong exercise as long as it feels good for your body and is fun.

You could also check out the Movement Tip to learn a novel way to put on your coat. It really can be that simple!

I'd love to hear how you might switch your routine up or start something new to give some protective love to your brain and all of the cognitive processes it runs. If you need help, don't hesitate to reach out to me.
Movement Tip
Increase your awareness of how you put on your coat for novel movement and more shoulder mobility!
Hope to move with you soon!
