In Shock Book Club Recap
We kicked off our fall programming with a book club discussion -- In Shock, My Journey from Death to Recovery and the Redemptive Power of Hope by Dr. Rana Awdish. The event took place over Zoom on October 28th and was expertly facilitated by Cheryl Cooke PhD, DNP, PMHNP-BC, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, researcher, and teacher.
Here is a summary from one of the attendees – Thank you, Cyndie for your review!!
I attended my first KCNA Book Club on October 28th via Zoom and would like to give a huge thanks for the moderator Cheryl Cooke and the book chosen for the discussion. In Shock, a book written by Dr. Rana Awdish is a must read for all health care professionals, covering Dr. Awdish’s personal near-death experience from defying death and the unbelievable complications, to her heartful experiences being the recipient of health care. She shares her wisdom not only as a physician but as a patient being treated by her peers. Her experience helps us recognize as health care providers that, the things we say and do make such a difference in our patient’s experiences navigating a complex system, making such a difference in their clinical and mental outcome from being treated.
The discussions during the Book Club were insightful and were also helpful in allowing the group to recognize that what we say and do really does make a huge difference. I look forward to attending many more of KCNA Book Clubs!
- Cyndie Richter-Juarez RN, MN.

Fall Summit Recap
A blustery, fall morning did not dampen the enthusiasm of the attendees of our in-person fall summit which was held on November 4th. Participants learned about inclusion health and the role of nurses within that approach. They were guided through current issues around homelessness, trauma, resilience, health equity, and the well-being of marginalized populations. They were thoroughly engaged with the presentation, and the Q/A session was fruitful.

Described as soulful and uproarious, forceful, and tender, Untamed is both an intimate memoir and a wake-up call for women. The book asks us to trust ourselves enough to set boundaries, make peace with our bodies, honor our anger and heartbreak, and unleash our truest, wildest instincts. In this memoir Doyle explores the joy and peace we discover when we stop striving to meet others’ expectations and start trusting the voice deep within us. As Glennon insists: The braver we are, the luckier we get. This book has earned much praise and is a #1 New York Times bestseller.
Author Glennon Doyle is an activist, speaker, podcaster, and author. She is the founder and president of Together Rising, an all-women-led nonprofit organization raising over $45 million for women, families, and children in crisis.

Fentanyl Crisis in King County
7 takeaways from expert panel
In a live, public event held at Seattle Public Library’s downtown location, The Seattle Times gathered local experts to share more about the fentanyl epidemic, including treatment options and how policymakers should respond. Highlights from the presentation and moderated discussion included: Fentanyl is more addictive than drugs prevalent in previous crises. Like morphine and heroin, fentanyl is an opioid that acts on the endorphin system in the brain,” said Dr. Caleb Banta-Green, director for Community-Engaged Drug Education, Epidemiology and Research at the University of Washington.
