By Jessica Saio, Esq.
When you hear estate planning, you may think it’s only for individuals who are older, wealthier, married, or have significant medical or mental health needs. You may think you are too young for estate planning. However, estate planning is for everyone, even if you are young, healthy, and just building your wealth. It’s never too early to start considering ways to protect yourself, your assets, and your loved ones.

Supreme Court Removes Heightened Standard for Section 504 and ADA Claims |
By Marion M. Walsh, Esq.
On June 12, 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously ruled in A.J.T. v. Osseo Area Schools that parents of students with disabilities no longer have to prove “bad faith or gross misjudgment” in connection with discrimination claims relating to their education. This is good news for students with disabilities and will make it easier to bring certain discrimination claims. The ruling means that students with disabilities have the right to sue under civil rights laws without having to meet a higher legal standard than other plaintiffs.
| | Understanding Supplemental Needs Trusts | |
By Joel Krooks, Esq.
For individuals with disabilities, maintaining access to public benefits like Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid is essential. However, receiving an inheritance or financial gift can unintentionally jeopardize eligibility for these benefits. This is where a Supplemental Needs Trust (SNT) comes in.
| | Meet the Team: Francesca Dumont | |
We are privileged to have Francesca Dumont join Littman Krooks this summer as she pursues her law degree. She is assisting our elder law and special needs planning team. She is in her third year at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University in White Plains, NY.
What inspired you to study law?
I was inspired to study law by my grandfather when I was younger. He suffered a stroke that took away his ability to walk, eat, or speak for himself, and I knew I wanted to be in a position to help others who had limited means to protect themselves. At the time, my main focus was preventing elder abuse. I’ve wanted to go into this field for a long time, but I only recently discovered the full legal protections available to vulnerable individuals. I continue to pursue this passion because of him, and I know how important the work is for other families in similar situations, so I want to help them, as well.
Do you have any favorite hobbies, movies, books, music, and sports?
- Reading – beyond the law school casebooks, I love finding new books to read. If it’s good enough, I’ll finish a book in a day! I always look on Goodreads to find new genres and titles that pique my interest.
- Cooking/baking – my mom is an amazing cook, and she always taught me the best meals to share with others. I personally believe that, because of her, I’ve perfected both my eggplant parmesan and chocolate chip cookie recipes.
- Watching baseball – I am a true-blue fan of the New York Yankees! Though they are my favorite, I really enjoy the sport overall and find the players and different positions fascinating to learn more about.
Fun fact:
I have a twin sister who is a nurse in Philadelphia, and a younger brother who just graduated from Iona University. Below is a photo of us with me on the right.
