It's Harvest Time!

Drive on nearly any back road in our corner of Massachusetts this time of year, and you’ll be treated to an iconic New England scene: the cranberry harvest, with a bright blue sky above and fall foliage in the distance.

Here at the A.D. Makepeace Company, we farm about 1,625 acres of bogs in Plymouth, Wareham, and Carver. Our harvest began in early September and continues through early November.

The harvesting of cranberries can be done in two ways: dry harvesting for the fresh fruit market, or wet harvesting for juices, sauces, dried cranberries, and other specialty products.

Dry harvesting uses walk-behind machines to collect berries, which are then transported to receiving stations to be graded by color and firmness. Wet harvesting takes advantage of the berry’s natural ability to float — bogs are flooded, machines shake berries off the vines, and floating fruit is corralled and loaded for delivery.

As a founding member of the Ocean Spray Cooperative, all of the A.D. Makepeace Company’s harvest is delivered to the Ocean Spray receiving station in Carver, MA, for cleaning, processing, and sale.

Looking to catch a glimpse of the iconic cranberry harvest? In addition to the events listed below, a schedule of cranberry activities can be found on the Cape Cod Cranberry Growers’ Association website. When available, daily postings of safe, viewable harvest locations on the ADM property are shared at Makepeace Farms throughout the harvest season.

Grumpy's Cranberry Harvest 5K

Join us for the 13th annual Grumpy's Cranberry Harvest 5K on November 1st!

Who is 'Grumpy' anyway? Perhaps you’ve admired the stunning nature photos displayed at the Meeting House at Redbrook in Plymouth or the Southcoast Health building at 100 Rosebrook Way in Wareham. Those images were the work of the late Bob (Grumpy) Conway, a long-time A.D. Makepeace Company employee whose love of the outdoors continues to inspire our community.

Perhaps you know a local high school student who has benefited from one of the more than $35,000 in scholarships awarded by the Cranberry Educational Foundation since the Grumpy 5K began.

The fundraising 5K takes place on November 1 - and you can be part of it! Register to run or walk, or sign up to sponsor and help make it all happen.

More Fall Fun!

This season, farms across our region are opening their doors to share the best of fall. From corn mazes, hayrides, and pumpkin patches to apple picking, cranberry bog tours, flower fields, and harvest fairs, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors while supporting local agriculture.

Southeastern Massachusetts Agricultural Partnership (SEMAP) has created a regional guide highlighting these experiences, making it easy for families and visitors to plan their autumn adventures. They also welcome updates—so if you know of a local farm event that isn’t listed, reach out and let them know.
