Navigating past the Seven Deadly Sins
FORMATION
Wednesdays, April 2 - 16, 2025
5:30 - 7:00 pm
St. Thomas, Diamondhead
5303 Diamondhead Circle
Diamondhead, MS
St Thomas Diamondhead continues the Lenten season looking at the Seven Deadly Sins first highlighted by the ancient monks of Egypt and further articulated by Gregory I in the 7th century, but most memorably brought to the popular mind by Dante's Purgatory--with its seven ascending levels of pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth. Although most have a deep physiological, psychological, or sociological causation, the theology behind them unburdens the heart and makes a path toward Easter!

Tenebrae
FORMATION
Wednesday, April 16, 2025
7:00 pm
Chapel of the Cross, Madison
674 Mannsdale Road
Madison, MS 39110
The word Tenebrae is Latin for “Darkness” or “Shadows” The most conspicuous feature of the service is the gradual extinguishing of candles until only a single candle, considered a symbol of our Lord, remains. Toward the end of the service this candle is hidden, typifying the apparent victory of the forces of evil. At the very end, a loud noise is made, symbolizing the earthquake at the time of the resurrection (Matthew 28:2), the hidden candle is restored to its place, and by its light all depart in silence. By drawing upon material from each of the former three offices of Tenebrae, this service provides an extended meditation upon, and a prelude to, the events in our Lord’s life between the Last Supper and the Resurrection.
