AUGUST 2024

TIM'S CORNER

Change is upon us! The third quarter of the year is usually when life really gets hectic. Work projects are in full swing, new processes and tools are being rolled out, organizational changes are happening all at the same time, kids are going back to school, after school sports and activities are ramping up, etc. After enduring the challenges of the first half of the year, we and our teams often begin to feel exhausted and fatigued. Normalcy and stability are set aside and managing through change is the new normal.

It's especially during these times that leaders need to be extra vigilant to provide the proactive leadership needed for our teams to thrive in the ambiguity that accompanies change. Here are a few thoughts to help navigate through these tough times.

AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH TLG COACH, DR. MICHAEL SESSIONS

What are the primary causes of change fatigue, and are there any specific types of changes that you've seen that tend to be more exhaustive for employees?

The primary source I think of change fatigue somewhat stems from the way your brain wants to work. Your brain is designed to look for patterns and identify routines so that it can automate decision making as much as possible. We do this because there's far too many stimuli coming at us from the world to process them all. So when change occurs, it disrupts our ability to anticipate what's coming next. In other words, our routines are disrupted and we can't automate; what we've automated doesn't work.[...] We keep waiting for the predictable outcomes to occur. In real change, they don't. That is we lose, temporarily, our ability to forecast the future, which is kind of the way our brain works in the world. So what is exhausting about change is having to consciously make decisions about the most likely next events when we don't have adequate information to forecast from.

CONSTANT CHANGE IS REWRITING THE PSYCHOLOGICAL CONTRACT WITH EMPLOYEES

HBR Article by Nadya Zhexembayeva

Growing employee dissatisfaction in the workplace can be explained by the likelihood that “psychological contracts” between employees and organizations — the implicit mutual understanding of each side’s obligations to the other — in many companies still reflect a past in which change was intermittent.

THE RE-ORG RAG (I'M MY OWN VP)

By Forrest Brazea

In a delightful ragtime tune, the piano player humorously narrates the tale of a company’s endless dance with reorganization. By the end, our protagonist finds himself on the "tooling team," tangled in a web of reporting lines that make him wonder if he’s now his own VP.

In the end, he can only hope for one thing: a bigger reorg to put them all out of their misery. But until then, it's just another round of the "re-org rag"!

Greater North Fulton Focus Series Luncheon and Concert

As members of the Chairman's Circle, we had the privilege of attending two remarkable events recently. First we enjoyed a perfect evening at the Ameris Bank Amphitheatre, where TLG was part of a special gathering. With a cool breeze in the air and even cooler vibes from Earth, Wind & Fire and Chicago, it was a night filled with excellent networking and stunning views. Thank you, GNFCC, for creating such a memorable experience!

Following this, we were invited to the Greater North Fulton Focus Series luncheon, where we listened to the inspiring journey of Chanda Bell and Christa Pitts, the visionary founders of The Lumistella Company. Their story of transforming Elf on the Shelf into an iconic brand was both captivating and enlightening. "No one will believe in your idea as much as you do," they emphasized, a powerful reminder for any entrepreneur.

They also shared how "the resources you need change as your business grows," highlighting the importance of adaptability in the ever-evolving world of business. Perhaps the most resonant takeaway was their advice on balance—working smarter, not harder, to avoid burnout. The luncheon left us not only inspired but equipped with valuable insights to apply in our own journey, reinforcing the importance of growth, both personal and professional.

Thriving Through Change: The Story of Quanah Parker in “Empire of the Summer Moon” by S. C. Gwynne

In the tradition of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, a stunningly vivid historical account of the forty-year battle between Comanche Indians and white settlers for control of the American West, centering on Quanah, the greatest Comanche chief of them all.

S. C. Gwynne’s Empire of the Summer Moonspans two astonishing stories. The first traces the rise and fall of the Comanches, the most powerful Indian tribe in American history. The second entails one of the most remarkable narratives ever to come out of the Old West: the epic saga of the pioneer woman Cynthia Ann Parker and her mixed-blood son Quanah, who became the last and greatest chief of the Comanches.

Against this backdrop Gwynne presents the compelling drama of Cynthia Ann Parker, a lovely nine-year-old girl with cornflower-blue eyes who was kidnapped by Comanches from the far Texas frontier in 1836. She grew to love her captors and became infamous as the "White Squaw" who refused to return until her tragic capture by Texas Rangers in 1860. More famous still was her son Quanah, a warrior who was never defeated and whose guerrilla wars in the Texas Panhandle made him a legend.

Dare to Lead: Brave Work. Tough Conversations. Whole Hearts.

When we dare to lead, we don’t pretend to have the right answers; we stay curious and ask the right questions. We don’t see power as finite and hoard it; we know that power becomes infinite when we share it with others. We don’t avoid difficult conversations and situations; we lean into vulnerability when it’s necessary to do good work. But daring leadership in a culture defined by scarcity, fear, and uncertainty requires skill-building around traits that are deeply and uniquely human. The irony is that we’re choosing not to invest in developing the hearts and minds of leaders at the exact same time as we’re scrambling to figure out what we have to offer that machines and AI can’t do better and faster. What can we do better? Empathy, connection, and courage, to start.

Whether you’ve read Daring Greatly and Rising Strong or you’re new to Brené Brown’s work, this book is for anyone who wants to step up and into brave leadership.
