Christmas Ships - New Skipper Social

Saturday June 13th 1-3pm

Thinking About Joining Christmas Ships for the First Time?

We'd love to have you. Come meet us in person at our New Skipper Social:

Saturday, June 13 · 1–3 PM Jantzen Beach Bar & Grill, inside the Holiday Inn Portland Columbia Riverfront (909 N Hayden Island Dr — right on the river!)

This relaxed, no-host gathering is your chance to ask questions, swap ideas, and get a real feel for what it's like to be part of something truly special. Chat with skippers who've been doing this for decades and others who are in their first or second season — everyone started somewhere.

Two questions we hear all the time:

"My boat is under 25 feet — is it too small?" "I have a fishing boat, not a fancy yacht. Can I still parade?"

The fleet includes boats from 14 to 70 feet. The primary requirements are that your boat is seaworthy, insured, and has some form of illuminated display. So: yes, and yes. Your boat belongs out there.

Join us June 13 — or reach out anytime at Contact@ChristmasShips.org. Please RSVP for this event to Kelly@Christmasships.org.

We'll see you on the water.

It's time to get your Christmas Ships Participation Form in!

December Is Closer Than You Think — And We Need Your Boat!

Can you believe it? Only 7 months stand between us and the 72nd season of the Portland Christmas Ship Parade. Before you know it, the Columbia and Willamette Rivers will be glowing with festive lights as our beloved fleet parades through the December dark.

It's a tradition worth being part of — and here's why.

It all started in 1954 with a single simply decorated sailboat. Over the decades, the Christmas Ships Parade has grown into the longest continuously operating illuminated boat parade in the United States, lighting up both rivers for fifteen magical nights every December. It's a designated Oregon Heritage Tradition — one of only 28 in the entire state — and every single boat on that water is privately owned, individually funded, and skippered by a volunteer just like you. Some Shippers have been parading for over 40 years. Others are brand new. There's room for both, and there's room for your boat.

Already a Christmas Shipper? The 2026 signup form is live right now — consider this your friendly nudge! Head to ChristmasShips.org and check it off your list.

The Coast Guard is pleased to announce the start of the National Recreational Boating Safety Survey (NRBSS), a nationwide effort commissioned by the U.S. Coast Guard's National Recreational Boating Safety Program. This survey is the only comprehensive source of recreational boating data across all 50 states and the District of Columbia and plays a critical role in informing safety and security initiatives on our waterways. The survey is approved by OMB under Information Collection Number 1625-0089.

The survey targets boat owners, individuals who rent or borrow boats, and members of the paddle craft community (kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards).

Currently, we are recruiting boaters with a link and QR code where they can sign up to be selected to take the survey.

Opening Day Results

What a wonderful day for Opening Day 2026. The weather was accommodating, the winds were fair and we did a great job with all the clubs who participated in getting out to the Vancouver Waterfront and put on a great show for the public. It all started with the Columbia River Yacht Club (host club for 2026) being led by a Helicopter! It was quite a sight to see on the river as he had to fly low in that airspace. They were followed by Hayden Island Yacht Club, Multnomah Channel Yacht Club, Portland Yacht Club, Rose City Yacht Club and then TYEE Yacht Club. Everyone did a wonderful job of getting through the review area and made the turn downriver to the Vancouver Waterfront. It was quite the view from the Review Boats. When it was all said and done, the Hayden Island Yacht Club took top honors for the day with what was a wonderful take on "Spring into Boating". Portland Fire had boats on the water giving a show, it was a true magical day on the water.

The results were pretty darn close for the top 5 clubs with this year having some of the best scores in Seamanship that we've seen in years. Congratulations to HIYC, and to everyone who did such a great job in this year's Parade!

We also had a showing on the Ch. 6 News with morning host Kohr Harlan joining us on the river earlier in the week for a number of segments that included CRYA, Our Sponsor Sheffield Marine Propellor, The Daughters of Neptune, Jantzen Beach Fuel Depot and CRYC who are celebrating its 80th year. Thanks to Ken and Cheryl Williams for providing the boat for the morning, Kohr and his cameraman were quite impressed!

"New" Adopt a Dock Program

At our last general meeting we talked about the program we are working to implement based on the Oregon State Parks program that exists today called Adopt a Park. Ken Tennefoss is heading up the Committee to help find groups that are interested in supporting this effort. JJ Collins Marine Park has for years been taken care of by the NOTS group. At our last meeting CRYA stepped up to take on Hadley's Landing. After putting so much effort into getting the ramp repair project going it only made sense. We have so many others, Gilbert River, Schwitter, Bartlett and others up and down the river that could use a champion. Is your club interested? Do you have a small group Interested in taking on a dock? This will be a topic at most of our general meetings going forward. If you have questions, or interest now in putting your "name" on a dock for its support please get ahold of Ken Tennefoss. KenT@crya.us

Please Share your boating Stories of Interest to our team to Share with others. Club things, Community Boating Things, Personal Boating Stories. Many things are of interest so Please Share!

We can't see every club's internal communication, but we have to think some of the articles would be great information for all boaters. If you find that article of interest, please forward it to cryanews@gmail.com after getting approval to share. We can all be more informed.
