News from Promise Heights

"C" is for Our Colossal DECEMBER:
Champions, Cookies, & Celebrations!

Certainly for most of us, 2020 hasn’t been our favorite year. Yet for Promise Heights, the year was also filled with joyful delights
If 2020 has left you feeling that you've experienced the toughest-ever marathon race with no end, you're not alone. That sentiment has been expressed by people throughout the nation and world. Yes, we've all been strapped into this disquieting ride since late last winter, and though the pandemic itself has no clear end, newly introduced COVID-19 immunizations--some tested at the University of Maryland Baltimore--lead us to collective hope that life will return a sense of normalcy in the not-too-distant-future.

Meanwhile, the community resilience that we've witnessed throughout Promise Heights has been heartening. We're so proud of students who courageously adjusted to remote learning, and also those few who are experiencing in-school learning at Renaissance Academy High School. We've been moved by an ability to diminish the digital divide and build equity in our community by offering devices and internet access to families previously who had neither. Our team has managed dozens of food distributions to assist families facing hard times, and each of these drives were supported by our many community partners and multi-sourced funders.

Winter will soon be here, as well as new holiday rituals. Since the pandemic necessitates celebrating at home, we're excited to share a new and creative holiday tradition: Ned Atwater has generously donated a portion of Atwater's Cookie Kit sales to support our front-line work in Upton/Druid Heights. This leaves us wondering: what's better than decorating cookies with people you love? Nothing, except perhaps knowing that a portion of your purchase will help our Promise Heights team continue front-line work throughout the coming winter.

“I'm proud to give a portion of the proceeds of our holiday Cookie Kits to support the ongoing front-line work of the entire Promise Heights Team.”
Ned Atwater, founder & owner of Atwater's Foods
'Tis the season! If you're craving new traditions while the pandemic has us sequestered at home, here's a fun holiday option: a delicious Atwater's Cookie Kit, with $5 from the sale of each kit being donated to Promise Heights. It's a great and fun way for your family to express their creativity! Each kit contains a mix of eighteen gingerbread, snickerdoodle, and sugar cookies, with three generously-loaded bag dispensers of easy-to-squeeze-royal-icing and four containers of scrumptious decorative sprinkles.

These most popular of Atwater's cookies are made without preservatives and with local butter and eggs, plus the flour and sugar is organic! If that's not great enough, besides helping fund our community-based work, and Atwater’s Foods, you'll also support several local businesses when so many independent companies are struggling.

We've made ordering a cinch with our minimal-clicks online link. Get speedy delivery via DoorDash or drop by your preferred store for in-store or curbside pickup at the time and day of your choice. Here's how to order and learn more.
Promise Heights Awarded as the UMB "Champions of Excellence"
"This pandemic has really given us great pause in terms of everything that we do, but our staff has really decided that we’re not going to let it stop us…. I’m overjoyed for my staff that we’re recognized in this way by the University....We’re all in this together!”

Bronwyn Mayden, Founder & Executive Director of Promise Heights
If you've been following our monthly newsletter and regular blog posts, you've likely noted how incredibly creative and driven our entire team has been since the pandemic first closed local schools and the entire nation in a collective lockdown. And despite many challenges, we’ve continued to introduce important new initiatives in our community schools while supporting the many needs of expectant and new mothers, as well as the infants, toddlers, PK through 12th grade students, and families of Upton/Druid Heights.

We've been out and about during these countless hours of community need, as well as working throughout the virtual realm. What an unexpected pleasure to receive UMB's prestigious award!

Please click here to learn more about this great honor, and we hope you'll also take a few moments to hear our Director, Bronwyn Mayden express her pride in our entire team.
Pajama Drama: A Pre-K Virtual Delight

Welcome to the Pajama Party Book Club, a recurrent Promise Heights evening event!
"But I don't want to leave!”

Deshean Weaver, 5-year old Promise Heights Pre-K student
As the season’s final Promise Heights Pajama Party wound down for a group of Judy Center at Eutaw-Marshburn Elementary School Pre-K students, Deshean Weaver lamented aloud, seemingly expressing our collective hope for the evening to continue for a bit longer.

Besides being delightful, the every-Thursday-evening virtual event also provided poignant insights into that moment in life when kids can count their age using only one hand. Simply put—it was so much fun! Click here to see what you missed!
WHAT BRINGS YOU JOY?
Now that the year is winding down, a group of Upton/Druid Heights moms who regularly gather for Zoom meetings recently discussed some of the things that have brought them the most joy in 2020.

Here's what they said:
STARTING NEW TRADITIONS WITH OUR CHILDREN. (They love hanging stockings and making cookies!)

HELPING RESIDENTS OBTAIN THEIR LLC AND THEN ASSISTING AS THEY BRAND THEIR NEW PRODUCT/BUSINESS

FINDING WAYS TO HELP THE ELDERLY IN OUR COMMUNITY
