Baxter. “I would like to thank each and every one of our dedicated deputies and civilian staff members who work diligently to provide protection to the citizens of Monroe County. Steuben County Sheriff's Office Participates in "No More Week"
With domestic violence and sexual assault a concern during the pandemic, Steuben County law enforcement and area organizations pulled together to combat these issues through its "No More Week" campaign, which ran March 7 through March 13.
Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard (pictured) says they have seen an increase in violence across the board this year under COVID restrictions and the uncertainty due to the pandemic.
"With National Women's Day [in March], it’s important for us all to come together and say ‘no more’ sexual assault, ‘no more’ violence against women," noted Sheriff Allard. "Only when we all say it together, can we change the culture and make sure that we change the dynamic. Too often, we as police officers respond to incidents where it’s a generational domestic violence situation, where it has been taught. We hope to break the generational violence and help people find the assistance they need in order to be in a better place."

Sheriff Scott Scherer (above, right) welcomed two of his predecessor Sheriffs to a tour of the new Herkimer County Jail, which is scheduled to open later this month once the New York State Commission of Corrections approves the jail’s new policies and grants a certificate of occupancy.
Retired Sheriff Sam Jesse (left), who served from 1995 to 2003 and Retired Sheriff Chris Farber (center), who served from 2004 to 2019, found the new facility to be a far cry from the former jail they had to operate during their tenures. That jail was built in 1978 to replace a previous building which had been in use for nearly 150 years. The new jail is approximately 74,000 sq. ft. and will accommodate 130 beds with room for expansion. The current jail holds only 29 inmates.
