You alone are immortal, the creator and maker of humankind; and we are mortal, formed of the earth, and to earth shall we return. All of us go down to the dust; yet even at the grave we make our song: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia."

Memorial Notice for Ruling Elder Kenneth (Ken) E. Hickman

Friends in Christ,

With the joyful assurance of Resurrection, and yet with grief at the ending of a fine life, it is with the deepest sadness that we let you know of the death of Ruling Elder Kenneth (Ken) E. Hickman on June 25, 2026.

Born on May 12, 1935, Ken was a remarkable leader, serving as Clerk of Session of First Presbyterian Church, York. In the Presbytery of Donegal, Ken served as moderator of the presbytery in 2001. At the time he passed from this life, Ken was serving his third term as Chair of the Presbytery Examination Commission, a role he carried out with expertise, competence, and much aplomb. In fact, we learned that Ken had had a stroke and had just been admitted to the ICU due to phoning him when the unheard thing happened: Ken did not appear from a meeting of the Commission he was expected to lead.

Ken was happily married for three years to Lois Kulp. Before that, he was married to Jeanne Hickman for 60 years, until her death. Be sure to click the obituary to read about his many accomplishments, including contributing to a Nobel Peace Prize, as well as his love of kids and grandchildren, model railroads, and ice cream. We will miss Ken and his leadership tremendously.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Caring Ministries at First Presbyterian Church, 225 E. Market St., York PA 17403.

Let us pray:

O, God, we thank you for your servant, Ken,

for the gift of his life, for the grace you have given him,

for all in him that was good and kind and faithful.

We thank you that he has entered the joy you have prepared;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Into your hands, O merciful Saviour,

we commend him.

Acknowledge, we pray, a sheep of your own fold,

a lamb of your own flock,

a sinner of your own redeeming.

Enfold him in the arms of your mercy,

in the blessed rest of everlasting peace,

and in the glorious company of the saints in light. Amen.

In All Things Let us Walk with Christ in Courage, Hope, and Generosity,

Rev. Dr. Erin Cox-Holmes

Executive Presbyter & Transitional Stated Clerk

The Presbytery of Donegal
